Josh Liendo won the 50-meter butterfly at the Canadian Trials on Sunday with a personal-best 23.27, taking down a Canadian record that had stood since 2015.
The 20-year-old Canadian lowered his lifetime best from last year’s Commonwealth Games by .15 seconds, sneaking under the eight-year-old Canadian standard of 23.30 set by Santo Condorelli at the 2015 World Championships. Liendo held off 18-year-old Ilya Kharun by .15 seconds in the final as they both clocked top 10 times this season (Liendo 6th, Kharun 9th).

It’s the second Canadian record of the week for Liendo, who shattered the 100 fly mark on Wednesday with a 50.36 to become the fifth-fastest swimmer ever in the event.

After the race, Liendo gave an interesting interview discussing the back-to-back scheduling of the NCAA Championships and Canadian Trials as well as his aspirations heading into this summer.
“It’s been so much fun,” Liendo said of Canadian Trials this past week. “Obviously with the meets back to back, it’s been just long. But I have the fans in the crowd and the staff that’s been here in Toronto welcoming me back. Even though I’ve been gone for a little bit, I haven’t missed a day. It’s been good to have them, couldn’t have done it without them.
“Last year, I showed the world and myself that I could compete at the highest level,” he added. “So now it’s just going back there and trying to improve on what I did last time. Last year, bronze and silvers, but the goal is to be at the top of that podium. I’m going to keep working and keep fighting until I get there.”

Kharun being only 0.15 back is scary. For a kid who definitely does not train any sprinting and is 2 years younger.
He did set the SCM WJR record at the SCM Worlds back in December (2022), so he does have speed for sure, no idea how his practices are structured.
He will be a student at ASU training under coach Bob Bowman starting in the fall.
