VERMILLION, S.D. – South Dakota men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams came away with a split of Summit League duals with rival South Dakota State on Saturday in the Marshall Center Pool.

The Coyote women won 11 of the 16 events contested and came away with a 180.5-117.5 win while the Coyote men suffered 177-110 setback.

Taylor BuhrCassie KetterlingCamilla Brogger-Andersen and Stella Fairbanks along with Jack Berdahl, all won two individual events apiece in the dual.

Buhr, a freshman, won the 100 breast in 1:07.57 and the 200 breast in 2:24.94 while Brogger-Andersen, also a freshman, touched the wall first in the 1,000 free (10:41.46) and 500 free (5:13.69).

Ketterling, a fifth-year senior, won the 100 fly (59.32) and 200 fly (2:15.52) while Fairbanks, a junior, swept the two diving events for the second straight meet, scoring 235.88 in the one-meter and 262.05 in the three-meter.

Emily Kahn, a sophomore, won the 100 free in 52.29 and the Coyotes won both relays contested during the meet, the 200 medley and 400 free. The quartet of Grace Schultz, Buhr, Ketterling and Kahn clocked 1:48.20 in the 200 medley relay. The foursome of Kahn, Skyler Leverenz, Brogger-Andersen and Christina Spomer won the 400 free relay in 3:24.27.

Berdahl, a sophomore, led the men’s team with victories in the 200 breast (2:10.75) and 100 breast (57.98).

Zachary Kopp, a senior, won the 50 free in 21.08 and Mack Sathre, a senior, won the 200 IM in 1:57.38.

The Coyote men won the 200 medley relay in 1:38.89 with Adam Fisher, Berdahl, Sathre and Kopp.

Sathre was second in the 100 fly (51.79) and Kopp second in the 100 free (47.61) while the men’s team also received runner-up performances from Keegan Henning (1,000 free), Matthew Sorbe (200 free), Aidan Gantenbein (100 back), Grant Wolner (100 breast) and Griffin Wolner (200 fly).

The foursome of Kopp, Gantenbin, Alec Thomas and Fisher were second in the 400 free relay in 3:08.80.

Second-place efforts for the women’s team included Maria Mattaini (1,000 free and 500 free), Leverenz (200 free), Maddie Katz (200 fly), Spomer (50 free), Kayla Middaugh (one-meter and three-meter diving) along with Ashley Van Dyne (100 fly) and Shannon Banark (200 IM).

South Dakota women notched its 14th dual win of the season, equaling last year’s team for the most in head coach Jason Mahowald‘s 18-year career. The men’s team, meanwhile, is now 6-6 on the year.

South Dakota competes in a Summit League dual in Omaha on Saturday, Jan. 28.

The South Dakota State men’s swimming and diving team sent out the 11 members of its senior class in style Saturday, recording a 177-110 victory over South Dakota in dual action at the Stanley J. Marshall Center.

The Jackrabbits improved to 10-5 in head-to-head competition this season after claiming 11 of 16 event titles.

Senior Spencer Fritze swept the diving events for SDSU, posting winning scores of 272.70 on the 1-meter board and 293.33 in the 3-meter competition. Fellow senior Zach Boyd was right behind with respective runner-up scores of 254.10 and 271.65.

In the swimming events, the Jackrabbits got another individual victory from a senior as Alex Kraft clipped Brookings native Matthew Sorbe at the wall in the 200-yard freestyle by one-tenth of a second, clocking a time of 1 minute, 44.46 seconds. Kraft would add a runner-up finish in the 500 freestyle (4:53.46) and would later team with Jon GallesRafael Negri and Eric Anderson for a winning time of 3:07.23 in the final event of the evening, the 400 freestyle relay.

Anderson, meanwhile, turned in an individual victory in the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.24 seconds that came after he was out-touched by USD’s Zach Kopp by the slimmest of margins — .01 seconds — in the 50 freestyle. Kopp recorded a time of 21.08 seconds, with Anderson coming in at 21.09 seconds.

Another closely contested race was the 200 butterfly final, where the top three finishers were separated by .52 seconds. The Jackrabbits’ Braxton McGrath turned in a strong final length to move past USD’s Griffin Wolner for a winning time of 1:56.86, with the Jackrabbits’ Damon Venner taking third in 1:57.38.

Jackrabbit freshmen accounted for three more event titles as Aiden Carstensen won the 100 backstroke in 52.08 seconds and Jack Ellison was victorious in  the two longest races of the meet, the 500 freestyle (4:51.01) and 1,000 freestyle (10:10.05).

Other winners for SDSU included Austin Smith in the 100 butterfly (51.54 seconds) and newcomer Denilson Cyprianos in the 200 backstroke (1:54.32). Carstensen added a runner-up time of 1:55.48 in the 200 back.

The Jackrabbits have a week off before closing out the regular season Feb. 3-4 at the USD Last Chance Meet in Sioux Falls.

Sianne Downes and Elisabeth Timmer were each two-time winners for South Dakota State, but the Jackrabbit women’s swimming and diving team came up short against in-state rival South Dakota, 180.5-117.5, in dual action Saturday at the Stanley J. Marshall Center Pool.

The visiting Coyotes won 11 of 16 events to down SDSU in the Jackrabbits’ final dual meet of the season. SDSU posted an 11-12 record in head-to-head competition during the 2022-23 campaign.

Downes, a junior from Edenvale, South Africa, led a pair of Jackrabbit sweeps of the top three spots in the two backstroke events. She won the 100-yard race in 58.70 seconds and later claimed the 200 in 2:06.02. Teammates Kelsey Kocon and Emma Walz traded spots to complete the sweeps; Kocon was second in the 100 (:59.00) and third in the 200 (2:08.99), while Walz finished as runner-up in the 200 (2:08.96) and third in the 100 (:59.74).

Timmer, the reigning Summit League Peak Performer of the Week, logged her two victories in the freestyle events, clocking winning times of 1 minute, 56.42 seconds in the 200 freestyle and 24.34 seconds in the 50 freestyle. She added a runner-up showing in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.37 seconds, .08 seconds behind winner Emily Kahn of USD.

Freshman Marissa Branham posted the other victory for the Jackrabbits by claiming the 200 individual medley in 2:13.24. Branham also was runner-up in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:28.12, while Morgan Nelson finished second for SDSU in the 100 breaststroke, 1:07.89.
