IUPUI Sets Three School Records In Senior Day Sweep

INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI swimming and diving team celebrated their seniors with the women’s team defeating Butler, 160-101 and the men’s team taking down Wabash College, 168-104. Emmaleigh Zietlow, Gabby Puryear-Lynch and Sebastian Otero all set new IUPUI records in the sweep.

“This was the springboard we needed to get fired up and ready for conference,” said head coach Damion Dennis. “I’m glad we were able to celebrate our seniors today. Our seniors have done a great job with our program and have led us from ground zero to serious momentum.”

Although the dives didn’t total into the team scores, freshman Otero swept the men’s competition with a new school record in the 3-meter dive totaling 397.05 and won the 1-meter dive with a score of 337.28. Sadie Smith won both women’s events with a score of 265.88 in the 1-meter and 240.98 in the 3-meter.

“Our divers continue to do outstanding things,” said Dennis. “Sebastian continues to set record after record and is setting himself up for some historic things at conference. All the divers are performing at an elite team level.”

On the women’s side freshman Puryear-Lynch recorded the fastest times in the 50 fly, 100 fly and a new IUPUI record in the 200 fly with a time of 2:01.86. Zietlow also set an IUPUI record with a time of 1:57.90 in the 200 back while also clocking top times in the 500 free and 100 breast. Senior Avery Brooks won the 50 breast with a time of 29.50 while senior Emma Theobald won the 100 back with a time of 56.05 and the 400 IM with a time of 4:30.02. Senior Ali Sippel recorded the fastest time in the 200 breast with a time of 2:22.54.

“Zietlow went a top five time in the 100 breaststroke and team record in the 200 back. Lights out, fire,” said Dennis. “It was great to see Malayna Mancinelli really coming along in the 50 back. Gabby had another fantastic meet as a freshman with a team record and freshman record.”

For the men, the three seniors of Nick DibleyWes Wickens and Kevin Burke accounted for five first place finishes. Wickens won the 50 fly with a time of 22.60, Dibley won the 1000 free with a time of 9:39.45 and Burke took first in the 100 fly with a time of 48.77. Several other Jags recorded top times on the day.

Maxwell Blume continues to hit best time after best time and really has some great momentum moving forward,” said Dennis. “I’m really pleased with our 500 free guys they have great swims today and continue to take serious steps forward.”

The IUPUI diving squad will have one more meet before conference when they host UIndy on January 26 at 2:00 PM. For the rest of the swim team they will now set their sights on the Horizon League Championships that will be held in the IUPUI Natatorium on February 15-18.

INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler swim team competed against IUPUI over the weekend in downtown Indianapolis. Sadie Brown was selected as the Butler “Swimmer of the Meet” by head coach Maurice Stewart. Brown won the 200 Fly and the 400 IM at the IUPUI Natatorium.

Brown’s 2:08.59 and 4:33.02 winning times in the 200 Fly and 400 IM placed the Freshman in the fifth and third spot on Butler’s all-time record books for those respective events. Allie Carmichael finished right behind Brown in the 400 IM and posted a time of 4:37.99 which saw her take the sixth spot in the school’s record book.

Carmichael’s success continued in the 200 Back, winning the event with a 2:15.00. Sophie Resner touched the wall just after Carmichael at 2:16.49, taking the top two spots for the Bulldogs. Resner also led Butler in the 100 Back and her 1:00.91 time was good enough for a third-place finish.

Butler’s best event was the 200 Free. Emily LandwehrJamie Gindorf, and Elizabeth Naylor swept the top three spots. Landwehr won at 1:57.80 while Naylor and Gindorf rounded out the two and three positions at 1:58.90 and 2:03.73.

The Bulldog’s swept the top two spots again in the 200 Breast. Kate Schilling won the event with her time of 2:29.36. Ava McGonigle placed second posting a 2:33.40.

Other events saw multiple Bulldogs earn third place finishes, starting with the 200 Medley Relay team of Gianna Leffler, Landwehr, Schilling, and Olivia Stotts who swam a 1:52.42. Stotts finished the 50 Back at 28.90 and Abigail Roberts rounded out the third-place results in the 50 Butterfly and 50 Free with 26.85 and 24.85 times.

Up next for the Bulldogs is the 14th annual Butler Invitational held at Fishers High School on Sunday, Jan. 29.

Wabash completed a weekend of competition against NCAA Division I opponents with a road dual meet at IUPUI Saturday. The Little Giants lost to the host Jaguars 168-104.

The Little Giants scored their top points late with the meet already decided. Justice Wenz picked up first-place points in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:16.38, ahead of teammate Eddie DaMata in second place with a time of 2:16.77. Aidan Mason scored third-place points by finishing in 2:28.88.

Ethan Comeyne added first-place points in the 200 butterfly, completing the race in 2:10.18. Nicolas Hakimian scored second-place points by finishing in 2:23.64. Ethan JohnsCaleb McCarty, and Xander Straw went 1-2-3 in scoring in the 200-yard freestyle. Johns touched the wall in 1:43.89. McCarty finished with a time of 1:49.65. Straw was third in the group of Wabash swimmers with a time of 1:51.34.

Dane Market finished the meet for the Little Giants by scoring first-place points in the 400-yard individual medley by finishing the race in 4;31.68. Morgan Govekar completed the race in 4:38.38 for second-place points for Wabash.

Jacob Penrose captured second place in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:23.05. Keane Albright finished third in the 50-yard backstroke with a season-best time of 26.54.

Straw placed third in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:52.93. Comeyene also picked up a third-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke by touching the wall for the last time in the race in 59.69. Barret Smith placed second in the 200-yard backstroke by finishing in 1:59.85. Albright completed the race in 2:14.22 to finish third.
