Omaha Earns Dominant Sweep Over St. Thomas

OMAHA, Neb. – Both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams dominated Saturday’s meet with wins against St. Thomas. The Mavericks returned home to take on the Tommies in their first meet of the semester and both came out on top.

The Maverick men cruised to a 182-60 win, while the Maverick women picked up a 200-43 win.

To start Saturday’s action, both the men and women swept the top-two finishes of the 200-medley relay. Gracie StreblowCaroline GardnerHailey Matthews, and Payton Easley claimed first for Omaha with a time of 1:45.28. Mason SchroederAmir HavivAJ Swibold, and Owen Hoak followed suit for first with a time of 1:33.32.

Carina MonroeHeidi Lenarz, and Maddie Mather went on to sweet first through third in the 1650 free. Monroe led the pack with a time of 17:53.54. It was nearly a minute faster than the second-place finisher. Nick Walkely also took first in the event for the men with a time of 16:29.80, which was almost a full 15 seconds better than second.

The Maverick women dominated the 200-free with the top-three placements. Hagemann took first with a time of 1:55.59. Miller and Michael Johnson found themselves in the top-three for the men. Miller came out on top with a time of 1:45.37.

It was all Omaha in the 50-free for both the men and women. Easley, Rachel Shelstad, and Streblow collected first, second, and third for the women. Easley swam a time of 23.97. Haviv, Grant Waszak, and Grant Schaeffer did the same for the men. Haviv led the men with a time of 21.53 for first.

The Maverick men and women repeated with the top-three in the 100-IM. Olivia Dendinger got her first top-finish of the day with a time of 59.61. She was the lone swimmer under a minute in the event. Schroeder collected another top-finish with a time of 53.64.

Matthews tallied her first individual medal of the day with a first-place finish in the 100-fly. She swam a time of 58.01. Elijah Clements joined Matthews with bragging rights in the event taking first with a time of 52.10. Rylee Trojan and Haviv each claimed second for Omaha.

Easley kept her momentum going in the 100-free for another first-place finish. She swam a time of 52.48. The Maverick women swept the top-three with Baker and Dendinger taking second and third, respectively. The men also swam another top-three sweep by Hoak, Miller, and Johnson. Hoak led the squad with a time of 46.85.

The 100-back saw first through third yet again for Omaha. Streblow swam a time of 57.89, while Luke Asbury swam a time of 53.90.

Jeffries then came out with first in the 500-free and a time of 5:16.26. Leinart and Mather completed the top-three finishes for the women. Asbury and Drake Nielsen finished back-to-back for the men with second and third. Asbury swam a time of 4:56.33.

In the 100-breast, Gardner came out on top with a time of 1:05.55. Leinart finished closely behind her for second. Haviv added another top-finish to his day with first and a time of 57.88 in the event.

The swim events capped with the 200-free relay. Both the men and women swept first and second. A team of Easley, Shelstad, Matthews, and Hagemann swam a time of 1:36.77 for first on the women’s side. Hoak, Schaeffer, Swibold, and Waszak swam a time of 1:25. 37 for first on the men’s side.

In Saturday’s diving events, the Mavericks stepped up to the challenge. In the women’s 1M, Holly Bernardin took first with a score of 264.75. She was just .25 away from qualifying for zones. Kady Eller then led the way in the women’s 3M. She posted a score of 245.03 for first.

Ian Blackstock then rewrote the record book for the men. He claimed first in both the 1M and 3M dives. In the 1M, Blackstock scored 263.93. He followed up with a score of 303.45 in the 3M.

The Mavericks return to action next weekend with another home meet. Omaha hosts South Dakota at 2 p.m. in H&K Pool.

St. Paul, Minn. — St. Thomas Men’s and Women’s Swim & Dive split Friday’s meet at South Dakota before falling to Nebraska Omaha on Saturday.

The men beat the Coyotes, 138.5-90.5, and lost to the Mavericks, 182-60, while the women fell at South Dakota, 159-84, and Nebraska Omaha, 200-43.

The Tommie men earned seven event wins on Friday, led by Joe Rudd in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.93) and the 200 IM (2:10.95), Alex Foti in the 400 freestyle (4:13.50) and the 800 freestyle (8:52.27), and Dakotah Parker in the 1m (267.08) and 3m dives (243.98). Philip Jensen brought home the final win of the day in the 100 backstroke (58.35).

St. Thomas’ women won two events, Grace Urkiel in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.64) and Abby Larson in the 800 freestyle (9:53.91).

Against Nebraska Omaha on Saturday, the Tommies came away with just one event win by the men. St. Thomas’ men totaled five second-place and five third-place finishes. The Tommie women recorded one second-place finish and five third-place finishes.

Foti recorded his third win of the weekend, this time in the 500 freestyle (4:48.91). He also took second in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 16:44.24, which ranks 12th all-time at St. Thomas.

Blake Baertlein finished fourth in the 100 IM with a time of 54.80, which is tied for 13th in program history.

St. Thomas will train prior to its final regular season weekend of meets Feb. 3-4. The Tommies will host Milwaukee at 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 3 while also taking part in the First Chance Meet hosted by Minnesota on Feb. 3-4.
