Gunnar Bentz and Jonathan Roberts Talk About Victories at the 2013 Junior National Championships

Gunnar Bentz of the Dynamo Swim Club (above) set a Junior National Championship Meet Record in the 200 breaststroke on Monday with a 2:12.88 in the men’s 200 meter breaststroke, and Jonathan Roberts of the North Texas Nadadores (below) just missed one in the men’s 1500 meter freestyle.

Roberts says in his interview that even in the 1500 free, he didn’t really have a race strategy. He gives a lot of credit to “the swimmer in lane 7,” which is Clearwater 14-year old Matthew Hirschberger, for going out so hard in this race and allowing Roberts to push his own pace early. That ended up working out well, as Roberts won his 3rd Junior National Championship of the year.

Watch both interviews, done by Anne Lepesant.

Ok. I have been to jrs before but this is a different meet. My kids are swimming fast and I’m proud of them. But this meet is big time. This kids going top 3 here would have been Olympians 12 years ago. Wow. USA swimming is in great shape. Great job coaches and swimmers. Being this fast is not a problem. It’s a blessing. Keep swimming fast. Go USA.
