Wang Shun and Kregor Zirk Scratch 200 Free on Day Two Prelims of Worlds

2022 FINA WORLD AQUATICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

The men’s 200 freestyle had the most prelims scratches on day two of the 2022 World Championships with seven swimmers dropping it from their schedules. We reported earlier this week that #2 seed Duncan Scott of Great Britain pulled out of the meet to focus on his health after dealing with COVID-19 and #12 seed Kristof Milak of Hungary already scratched the event.

Additionally, #17 Kregor Zirk of Estonia and #18 Wang Shun of China also scratched the men’s 200 free. Zirk placed 20th in the 400 free yesterday, about 3 seconds off his entry time. He is still entered in the 200 fly on Monday. Shun tied for 14th in the 400 IM on Saturday. He is the top seed in the 200 IM on Tuesday and is likely focusing on that event.

South African backstroker Pieter Coetze will be absent from the men’s 100 back where he was ranked #15. He withdrew from the meet after testing positive for COVID-19 days before the competition began. Alfonso Mestre of Venezuela and Joaquin Vargas of Peru also withdrew from Worlds due to COVID-19 diagnoses before the meet. They were seeded #47 and #45, respectively, in the men’s 200 free.

New Zealand’s Eve Thomas was the only scratch in the women’s 1500 free (#17). She finished in 13th place in the 400 free on Saturday and she is still entered in the 800 free where she is ranked 11th.

There were no scratches in the women’s 100 breast and the only scratch in the women’s 100 back came from #39 Ganga Malwaththage of Sri Lanka. She is ranked 30th in the 200 back on Thursday.
