Two-time Olympic silver medalist at the 2020 Olympic Games, Arno Kamminga, made some noise at a domestic meet over the weekend. Competing at the 2022 Eindhoven Swim Meet, 26-year-old Kamminga captured a trio of victories in his signature breaststroke event.
In the 50m breast, Kamminga notched a winning effort of 27.21 after having landed lane 4 in that day’s morning heats with a slightly quicker 27.10.
Kamminga also topped the 200m breast podium in a mark of 2:10.02 to cruise to the wall first in that event.
However, the main attraction came in the 100m breast, where Kamminga powered his way to a result of 58.52 to scorch the field and render himself once again as the #2 breaststroker in the world behind British champion Adam Peaty.
Kamminga actually scored two sub-59 seconds swims, first establishing himself as the man to beat with an AM effort of 58.89 before firing off the 58.52.
Splits for his monster win included 27.70/30.82 to come just over half a second outside of the 58.00 he logged for silver in Tokyo. In fact, his 58.52 effort here would have placed 4th in that Olympic final.
But in-season performances like this are relatively commonplace for Kamminga, with the man owning over 20 sub-59 second swims over the course of his still-rising career.
Additional Winners:
- Marrit Steenbergen topped the podium twice for the women, winning the 100m free in 54.73 and the 200m free in 2:00.58.
- Maaike de Waard also was a two-time gold winner, taking the 100m back in 1:00.47 as well as the 100m fly in 59.38.
- While brother Nyls Korstanje is racing for the NC State Wolfpack stateside, Tim Korstanje earned 100m fly gold here in 54.87, the 5th fastest time of his career.
- Thomas Verhoeven topped the men’s 50m fly podium in 23.90, although his morning swim of 23.77 was just a tad quicker.
- The men’s 50m free saw former national record folder Jesse Puts get it done in 22.17, while he also clocked 49.61 to take the 100m free.
Martinenghi more of a threat to Peaty in the 50 than Kamminga in the 100 in Budapest?
Not saying Kamminga will beat Peaty because I don’t think he will, but given the time Peaty took out of the water at the end of 2021, I don’t think he can just roll out of bed and win with a 57-mid this year. He’s going to have to put in some serious work to not have Kamminga breathing down his neck this summer.
Would love to see a race video if available. Like Peaty earlier on, Kamminga still doesn’t seem to have figured out his pullouts and starts quite yet (he was definitely experimenting with them this fall, as his starts looked different from what he was doing through the Olympics). It is easier said than done to… Read more »
Peaty has been putting in the work. He will be on this summer.
The breaststroke prince is back
Budapest gonna be 1,2, 3 Peaty, Kamminga, and Martineghi again.
No
My money is on Arno “the dinosaur” Kamminga to smash Adam “the train” Peaty.
I agree, think Andrew could challenge for Bronze but ultimately just misses out to Martinenghi.
Sheesh, goodnight Peaty sleep tight!
Peaty does a 58.5 in his sleep.
