Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Brooke Shinnick of Lutherville-Timonium, MD has announced her decision to continue her academic and athletic careers at Loyola University in Maryland.
She is a senior at Towson High School and she competes year-round with Loyola Blakefield Aquatics. The commitment will keep her close to home – the campus is only about a 10-minute drive from her high school.
I chose Loyola University, Maryland, because of not only its inviting environment, beautiful campus, modern athletic facilities, and its history of Jesuit education but its incredible coaching staff! I can’t wait to be a Hound!
Shinnick was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma Cancer on July 13, 2020. She has been in remission for 10 months.
After her diagnosis, she took a pause from swimming and after nearly a year, she got back into the pool in January of 2021. She has since been focusing on working her fitness back up.
She most recently competed at the 2021 USA Swimming Futures Championships in Richmond, VA. She has qualifying times in the 800 and 1500 meter free and the 500, 1000, and 1650 yard free. In July, she swam the 400 free, touching 85th in a time of 4:47.09. She also time-trialed the 50 fly (32.16) and the 100 free (1:04.84).
Top SCY Times:
- 500 free – 4:58.70
- 1000 free – 10:10.52
- 1650 free – 17:01.56
Shinnick will join the Greyhounds beginning in the 2022-2023 season. Her top times would have made her the team’s fastest swimmer in the 500 and 1000 free. She would have been the second-fastest competitor in the 1650, behind Lily Mead. Her 1000 free time is currently tied with the school record, set by Courteney Martin in 2015.
The 2021 Patriot League Championships were canceled a month before they were set to take place. Instead, the conference set up a series of dual meets for the schools to compete in. Loyola finished second in a tri-meet against Bucknell and American. Shinnick’s times would have placed her fourth in the 500 free and third in the 1650 free.
Shinnick will join the team as a member of the class of 2026.
