Thomas Joswiak Drops 25 Seconds in 1500 for 16:01 – Austin Sectionals Day 4

On the final day of the Austin Sectionals, Kathryn Shanley of Foothills Swim Team won the women’s 1500 in 16:57.78, marking a new personal best. Not only did Shanley touch first by over 10 seconds, she dropped nearly 5 seconds from her previous best of 17:02.61. Her previous best was from July of 2019.

Phoenix Swim Club’s Thomas Joswiak, 17, won the men’s 1500 in a massive personal best. Joswiak clocked a 16:01.68, taking a whopping 25.14 seconds off his previous best of 16:26.82, which was from May of this year.

In the women’s 200 IM, Colorado Springs Area Swimming 16-year-old Caroline Bricker and Elevation Athletics 17-year-old Mary Codevilla battled it, with Bricker touching 1st in 2:16.83 to Codevilla’s 2:16.94. Bricker got out to a faster start, splitting 28.88 on fly and 35.95 on back for a 1:04.83 first 100, while Codevilla split 29.50 on fly and 36.00 back for a 1:05.50 first 100. Bricker again out-split Codevilla on breaststroke, 39.15 to 39.36, so Bricker turned at the 150m mark at 1:43.98, while Codevilla was 1:44.86. Codevilla made up nearly all of the gap on freestyle, splitting 32.08, while Bricker came home in 32.85.

Swim Neptune’s Keaton Jones, 16, won the men’s 200 IM in 2:05.13. Jones was just off his personal best of 2:05.11. Loveland Swim Club’s Zara Zallen, 16, won the women’s 50 free in 26.17. The swim marked a huge personal best for Zallen, coming in 0.55 seconds under her previous best of 26.72, which was swum in March of this year.

Rio Salado Swim Club 17-year-old Jeremy Graunke won the men’s 50 free in 22.48, touching just off his lifetime best of 22.44.
