IU post-grad Bailey Andison clocked another massive best time tonight at the Speedo Sectionals meet being held at IUPUI and Elkhart locations. Andison, who blew away her previous best in the 400 IM on Friday, was back in action this evening, where she swam a 2:09.99 200 IM. The swim not only marked a personal best by over a second, it makes Andison the #2 Canadian performer of all time in the event.

Andison now sits behind only Sydney Pickrem, who holds the Canadian Record at 2:08.61. Pickrem was the 2019 World Championships Bronze medalist in the event, and before Andison tonight, was the only Canadian women’s swimmer to crack 2:10 in the event.

The swim also makes Andison the #4 performer in the world this year, behind Australia’s Kaylee McKeown, great Britain’s Abbie Wood, and Japan’s Yui Ohashi. Here are the current top 5 performers in the world this year:

Rank Swimmer Country Time
1 Kaylee McKeown AUS 2:08.23
2 Abbie Wood GBR 2:09.38
3 Yui Ohashi JPN 2:09.59
4 Bailey Andison CAN 2:09.99
5 Miho Teramura JPN 2:10.08

Andison’s previous best of 2:11.33 was swum at the 2019 Canadian Trials, where she finished 3rd. Here is the split comparison between her race tonight, and her previous best time.

2021 INDY SECTIONALS 2019 CANADIAN TRIALS
FLY 28.41 28.68
BACK 32.70 (1:01.11) 34.20 (1:02.88)
BREAST 37.34 (1:38.45) 36.79 (1:39.67)
FREE 31.54 31.66
FINAL 2:09.99 2:11.33

The difference tonight was that Andison has evidently made great progress on her backstroke in the past 2 years. Her back split tonight was a full 1.5 seconds faster than her back split from 2019. She was also a tick faster in fly and free tonight, but she was 0.55 seconds slower on the breast split versus 2019.

Great swim Bailey. It is great to see that Canadian female swimmers can succeed beyond 16. Such a focus especially in Ontario for female swimmers to overtrain at a young age. There is swim life after 16!

It’s Kaylee McKeown and Emma McKeon not Emma McKeown! And the one you want is Kaylee.

Great time for Andison! It is perplexing that several US based Canadian swimmers coming to Trials in Toronto in May are still racing in US these past couple of weeks as there is a mandatory 14day quarantine upon arrival. Unless already named to team, who can afford 2wks out of water 9wks out of Olympic trials?

Perplexing? Hardly. She’s training with an amazing group, she’ getting great coaching, she’s racing, and she’s living her life. Canadian Trials are not a 100% sure thing at this time. Toronto is still in lockdown. While conditions are not ideal, she is where she wants and needs to be to be prepared for Trials.

Agree, nothing is 100% during Covid but the trials test event is in less than 2 weeks and is still on even though Toronto is in lockdown. So still very hopeful Trials will happen which means the Canadian swimmers still in US have to manage a 14 day quarantine out of water between now and Trials starting May 24th.
