After finishing runner-up in 2019, East Grand Rapids claimed the 2021 Michigan D3 State title yesterday, finishing almost 90 points ahead of defending champions Holland Christian. This is East Grand Rapids’ 26th title in program history.

East Grand Rapids didn’t win any swimming events, instead utilizing team depth to win the state title, with at least one swimmer finishing top-five in nearly every event. Their divers also chipped in big-time, as Charley Bayer (490.75) and Billy Kirchgessner (472.90) went 1-2.
Milan junior Andrew Dobrzanski was one of two double winners yesterday, as he was 1:50.07 in the 200 IM and 54.67 in the 100 breast. Dobrzanski has made gigantic improvements this season, coming into it at 56.24 in the breast and 1:52.17 in the IM. He was also 45.42 anchoring their 400 free relay and 25.18 swimming breast on their medley relay.
Dobrzanski’s 100 breast time was a D3 state record by over a second.
Holland Christian’s Colin Kalkman was the other double winner, going 45.72 in the 100 free and 50.96 in the 100 back. Kalkman edged out Detroit Country Day’s Jacob Ryan (45.92) in the free and Pinckney’s Tyler Ray (51.09) in the back. Ryan won the 50 free (20.58) and Ray the 100 fly (49.23).
Kalkman was also 45.16 to anchor Holland Christian to the 400 free relay title.
OTHER WINNERS
- Spencer Boling-Hamer of Trenton took the 200 free in 1:42.21.
- Mason’s Jonas Cantrell posted a 4:27.58 to win the 500 free. The next event, he anchored Mason’s 200 free relay to a state title (20.42) as they went 1:26.52.
- Cranbrook Kingswood took the 200 medley relay in 1:34.97 as sophomore Ethan Schwab was 24.65 on the breast leg, a huge split. Schwab was runner-up in the 500 free (4:35.14) and 100 breast (55.46), both of them lifetime bests as he was also under the old D3 record in the breast.
