SSPC: Bobby Finke Breaks Down Going 8:59 at the End of 9×1000 in Practice

In the SwimSwam Podcast dive deeper into the sport you love with insider conversations about swimming. Hosted by Coleman Hodges and Gold Medal Mel Stewart, SwimSwam welcomes both the biggest names in swimming that you already know, and rising stars that you need to get to know, as we break down the past, present, and future of aquatic sports.

I sat down with distance savant Bobby Finke to talk about what has been going so right for him in the pool lately. We saw Finke absolutely destroy the American and US Open records last year in the 1,650, registering a mind-blowing 14:12. Well, good news for swim fans: he’s only gotten better since then. Finke tells us what his quarantine period looked like and what training has been like since getting back to Gainesville, including a set of 9×1000 where he surprised even himself on the last one.

I think when you say “Florida Man” you have a different thing in mind than when most people say “Florida Man”.

Yeah but Florida man still holds 200IM record, Florida man won 100 fly gold at rio, Florida man beat 100 fly record in 2019, and Florida man just broke 50 in the 100IM. That makes up for “Florida man impaled by trampoline during hurricane after buying 17 for back yard”(real story)

He’s claiming Bolles but that doesn’t really count as being from FL if you went to boarding school there.

Are all of these in reference to Lochte? I don’t ever remember him possessing child porn or soliciting sex from a minor…

I thought it was 30×1000 @ 10:00 and he made the first 27-28, missed the 29th but made the 30th.

Lol that time alone could get you a full ride to any college in the US… and he did it after 8 other 1000s. Yeah that’s fast.

8:59 gets you a full ride in D1? Man I got screwed then.

If you went 8:59 unsuited in practice after a set like that, yes you definitely got screwed.

8:59 will get you a full ride if it’s paired with a 19.0 50, 42.x 100 and you’re quick in a stroke as well…

Omg that is wild. I graduated 2005 to 2007 from high school. I was 48 low fly and back. 20.3 50 and 44.0. I got a full ride to a top 10 school (back then). I love how fast swimming has gotten. I have to mention, I only did 5 singles a week so my full ride might’ve been on potential. 6 time NCAA finalist (4 A finals).

How did you graduate 2005 to 2007? Who takes 3 years for graduation? That’s a hell of a grad party.

Coleman Hodges

Coleman started his journey in the water at age 1, and although he actually has no memory of that, something must have stuck. A Missouri native, he joined the Columbia Swim Club at age 9, where he is still remembered for his stylish dragon swim trunks. After giving up on …
