BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y.– The Sacred Heart University Swimming and Diving team concluded the regular season on a high note this afternoon as they defeated St. Francis Brookyln this afternoon by a final score of 155-144. The Pioneers now set their eyes on the Northeast Conference Championships which kick off on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 6:00 p.m.

In diving, sophomore Molly Martin led the way as she won both the 1meter and 3meter dives with scores of 221.25 on 1 meter and 244.60 on 3 meter. Her score on the 3 meter set a new team record.

In swimming, senior Lauren Somers took first in the three events coming in the 200 meter freestyle with a time of 1:55.47 followed by crushing the 100 meter free with a time of 54.20 and lastly taking the 50 free with a time of 25.33.

First year Casey Barrett took first in the 100 meter backstroke with a time of 1:01.91 while fellow first year Kelly Bartnett took first in the 200 meter backstroke with a touchtime of 2:14.05. First-year Ashley Ayala placed right behind Bartnett in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:14.80.

Junior Emily Peter also had a first place finish coming in the 100 meter butterfly with a time of 1:00.72. Sophomore Nicole Tingley took first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:15.85 as fellow teammate Ayala took second with a time of 2:17.95.

What sealed the victory for the Pioneers was in the relays as the team of Kelly BartnettCasey BarrettEmily Peter and Lauren Somers took first in the 200 freestyle relay as they won with a time of 1:41.26. The B relay of the Fiona MaxwellNikole RudisJulia Pusateri and Grace Bergstrom took third with a time of 1:45.44 in the event rounding out the scoring for the Pioneers.

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, NY – The St. Francis College Brooklyn men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams suited up for their final home meet of the season. The Terriers celebrated their senior class, as the men competed against the United States Merchant Marine Academy and the women went head-to-head with Sacred Heart University.

The Terriers’ men’s squad was topped by the Merchant Marine Academy, 191-107, while the women’s team was defeated by Sacred Heart, 155-144.

Men’s swimming co-captain Micah Wesselhoff had a third-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.33. The Terriers had a trio of seniors compete in the 100-yard breaststroke. Raphaelle GregoireLara Milak, and Fanny Stromstedt swept the event taking first, second, and third-place, respectively. Gregoire put up a time of 1:07.87, Milak completed with a 1:08.56, and Stromstedt touched the wall at 1:09.08.

Freshman Mariajose Lopez took first-place in the 1000-yard freestyle, coming in with a time of 10:50.00. Angelica Stark also had a strong race, putting up a time of 11:11.58, which earned her second-place in the 1000-yard freestyle.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Ana Paula Montes de Oca took first-place in the 200-yard butterfly (2:15.11). The junior also took second-place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:56.69.
  • Belgrade native Dorde Spasic earned a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle, with an impressive time of 1:46.35. He also took second-place in the 100-yard freestyle.
  • Abigail Wood had strong second-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke, touching the wall with a time of 1:03.00. Carmen Botha came in not too far behind taking fourth-place with a time of 1:05.31.
  • Kayla McKenzie took second-place in the 3-meter dive as she posted a mark of 214.55.
  • Beatriz Gomes Angelo had a great finish to her 200-yard backstroke taking third-place with a time of 2:14.88.
  • Binald Mahmuti notched a first-place finish in the 200-yard IM with a final time of 2:01.27. The junior also recorded a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.39).
  • Kavin Duraku took third-place in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:19.62. Meriton Veliu came in right behind him taking fourth-place (2:21.12).
  • In the women’s 100-yard freestyle Jovana Terzic and Hanne Romstad placed in the top five. Terzic took second with a time of 55.87 and Romstad finished with a time of 57.03 taking fourth-place.
  • Benedek Lendvai dominated in the 1000-yard freestyle taking first-place for the Terriers. The Budapest native executed his race in a time of 10:00.43.
  • Senior Julie Olivares competed in the 100-yard backstroke and finished with a time of 1:14.30.
  • To close out the meet, the men took second-place in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The relay squad consisted of Andrew GubarevAndrej Sokolovski, Wesselhoff, and Spasic, who came out with a time of 1:29.10. The men’s team also took second-place in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:34.77. This squad consisted of Ricardo BerenguerTadeu RodriguesMatheus Santos, and Zane Drobenko.

UP NEXT:
The Terriers are back in action for their Conference Championships. The women’s team takes part in the NEC Championship from February 19-22, while the men’s squad competes in the Metropolitan Championship from February 20-23.
