BALTIMORE – The East Carolina men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams closed out their dual meet season with a sweep UMBC at the UMBC Aquatic Complex Saturday afternoon.
The ECU men (6-2) posted a 174-126 victory while the ladies (7-2) picked up a 171-121 triumph. The Pirates captured 25 of the 32 overall events in the meet with the women claiming of 15 of event titles.
“It was a great way to finish our regular season with two wins against a championship caliber program,” ECU Head Coach Matthew Jabs said. “It’s never easy on the road, but I thought we had a solid performance, and stepped up when we needed to in order to secure the wins.”
Four ladies claimed first-place in two events. Sophomore Mariana Vignoli finished first in back-to-back races, winning the 1000-yard freestyle (10:20:04) and 200-yard freestyle (1:53.68). Freshman Jodi Ogle touched first in the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.13) and the 200-yard IM (2:07.58).
Sophomore Shannon Stott won the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.95) and 500-yard freestyle (5:04.42), while senior Catherine Johnson captured first-place in the 50 (24.30) and 100-yard (52.33) freestyle (52.33).
Freshman Rachel Strickland earned her first career win, finishing 0.75 seconds ahead of the field in the 100-yard backstroke. Fellow freshman Anna Otto won her first event as well, scoring 226.80 points to win the 3-meter diving competition.
A trio of men won multiple races with sophomore Lyubomir Epitropov sweeping the breaststroke events (100 / 56.45; 200 / 2:03.24) and sophomore Marek Osina capturing the 200-yard backstroke (1:47.82) and 200 IM (1:51.24). Freshman Rodrigo Romero claimed first-place on the one and three-meter springboard.
Adam Mahler dominated the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:49.39 and freshman Dude Matic winning his first 100-yard butterfly (49.81) race.
The Pirates will return to action beginning Feb. 19 in Houston at the 2020 American Athletic Conference Championships.

BALTIMORE – The UMBC swimming and diving teams celebrated senior day by hosting a strong East Carolina Squad in a dual meet at the UMBC Aquatic Complex.
The ECU men got past UMBC, 174-126, while the Retriever women fell, 171-121.
“I am very proud of our men and women today,” said head coach Chad Cradock. “They competed with their heart and did what they could against a deep and strong ECU program. What I love most about our team is that we are winning the close ones as we to championships, and that is what matters.”
The meet ended in exciting fashion as the Men’s 400 freestyle relay quartet of sophomores Tiago Asakawa (Sumaré, Brazil), Satori Dobbie (Christchurch, New Zealand), freshman Gabe Laracuente (Gaithersburg, Md./Good Counsel) and senior Ilia Rattsev (Moscow, Russia) won the race by .12 seconds in a pool record 3:02.66.
On the Women’s side, senior Haylee Committe (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) took gold in the 100 yard breaststroke in a time of 1:05.16. Caroline Sargent (Trumbull, Conn.) took second in both the 100 and 200 yard backstroke, while Committe added a second place finish of her own in the 100 yard freestyle. Senior Sotiria Neofytou (Limassol, Cyprus) took second in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 57.10, just .45 behind the gold winner from ECU.
For the Men, junior Kai Wisner (Syracuse, N.Y.) took first in both the 1000 freestyle (9:33.82) and the 500 freestyle (4:36.38). Senior Garrett Wlochowski (Manchester, Conn.) also earned gold, as he won the 100 yard backstroke in a time of 49.99. Rattsev added to his gold total when he won the 50 yard freestyle in 20.79, and took first in the 100 yard freestyle in a time of 46.02. He also took second in the 200 yard freestyle, missing out on first by .05.
The Retrievers return to action February 13, when they travel to Worcester, Mass to defend their America East titles.
