The Penn State women got off to a lead in the first day of their home dual meet with Buffalo. The Nittany Lions won 5 of the 6 individual races on Friday. They started things off with a 7-second victory in the 400 medley relay (3:45.11).
Madison Murtagh was the first individual winner of the meet. She battled with Buffalo’s Brittney Beetcher in the 1000 free. Beetcher was out with the lead, but Murtagh came back to win it 10:14.23 to 10:17.53. Teammate Brooke Matthias was next up in the 200 fly (2:03.46), using her back-half speed to edge out fellow Nittany Lion Maddie Hart (2:03.71) at the finish.
The streak continued as Carly Hart dominated the 200 breast (2:15.17), but Buffalo’s Jillian Lawton prevented them from sweeping the events. Lawton led a 1-2-3 charge in the 100 free. Teammate Katie Burns (51.88) flipped with a slight lead, but Lawton pulled away on the back half to win the race in 51.58. Toni Naccarella followed with a 51.71 for the Bulls, while Burns held on for 3rd.
Penn State’s Stephanie Szekely and Buffalo’s Olivia Sapio battled in the 400 IM. Szekely took it out with the lead through the 200, but Sapio made a charge on the breast leg to close the gap. With a final charge on the free leg, Sapio (4:24.89) nearly caught Szekely (4:24.83), but Szekely was able to hold her off by 6 hundredths.
Marie Schobel gave Penn State the final individual win of the day in the 100 back (54.87), but Buffalo closed the session with a win in the 200 free relay (1:33.27). Naccarella had the fastest split of the field with a 22.98 anchor.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State women’s swimming team concluded day one of a two-day dual meet against Buffalo with a 95-52 lead, Friday evening in McCoy Natatorium.
Top Swims
Junior Carly Hart, sophomore Marie Schobel, and sophomore Brooke Matthias had a great first day of competition, each coming away with an individual win while also swimming in the winning 400 medley relay team. Hart won 200 Breast (2:15.17), Schobel won the 100 Back (54:87), and Matthias won the 200 fly (2:03.46).
Sophomore Madison Murtaugh and junior Stephanie Szekely, each earned an individual win, as Murtaugh came out on top of the 1000 free (10:14.23) and Szekely won the 400 IM (4:24.83).
Nittany Lion Relays
To open the meet, the Nittany Lions took first and second in the 400 medley relay. The winning team of Schobel, Hart, Matthias, and Abbie Amdor had a time of 3:45.11 while the second place team of Emma Harvey, Stephanie Szekely , Margaret Markvardt, and Elizabeth Gaspari trailed with a time of 3:52.34. The final event of the evening was the 200 free relay, and the Nittany Lions finished in second and third.
