The annual Cal Poly/Cal Queen & King of the Pool dual meet has kicked off, and Cal senior Zheng Quah has been crowned this year’s King of the Pool. Quah had a dominant meet, winning 4 of the 5 pentathlon events. Alongside Quah, Cal senior Abbey Weitzeil won 4 of the 5 women’s events to retain her Queen of the Pool title.

Quah kicked the meet off with a win in the 100 fly (46.34), touching in 2 seconds ahead of teammates Pawel Sendyk (48.77) and Jack Xie (49.71). Quah continued his dominance with a victory in the 100 back (46.52). Cal junior Daniel Carr was the next fastest finisher with a 47.76.
Switching to the 100 breast, it was Cal sophomore Reece Whitley who took the win and prevented Quah from a 5-for-5 event sweep. Whitley won the event with a 53.59, a second-and-a-half ahead of sophomore transfer Hugo Gonzalez (54.92). Backstroker Carr finished in third with a 55.66 while Quah finished in sixth with a 57.01.
In the 100 free, Quah sprinted to a 43.80, holding off 2019 NCAA 50 free champion Ryan Hoffer (44.47). Quah then secured his 2019 pentathlon title with his 100 IM top time of 49.01. Cal teammates Gonzalez (49.35) and Carr (49.78) also swam under the 50-second barrier in the event.
Quah’s overall time of 4:02.68 was 6 seconds faster than runner-up Carr (4:08.86) and third-place finisher Gonzalez (4:09.64). In 2018, Quah finished in second place with a time of 4:08.06, improving in every single event he swam from last year’s edition of the meet.
Comparing Quah’s overall time to last year’s winner Andrew Seliskar‘s winning time, Quah eclipsed his time by 3 seconds. Along with that, Quah won 2 more events than when Seliskar took the 2018 crown. Breaking down the times, Quah had stronger fly/back times to propel him throughout the 5-event meet.

Impressive to beat Hoffer in the 100 free
Hoffer is a huge taper swimmer I think his double 46s are the most impressive part of his swims
