While competing on the final day of the FINA World Cup Series stop in Jinan, China, Lithuanian Danas Rapsys produced a new national record in the men’s 200m free.

After posting a morning swim of 1:51.21 to warm-up, the 24-year-old crushed a mark of 1:45.07 to take the meet title and lower his previous World Cup Record of 1:45.74 notched last week in Tokyo. Rapsys’ performance tonight shaved .05 off of his national standard of 1:45.12 he logged at the 2018 Swim Open Stockholm.

Here’s a split comparison between Rapsys’ former and new Lithuanian National Records, reflecting how the man bided his time a little more this evening on the front end, opening a second slower than last year.

50.62/54.50 = 1:45.12

51.61/53.46 = 1:45.07

This new national and World Cup Record is a small consolation for would-be World Championships gold for the Lithuanian. In the Gwangju final, Rapsys touched the wall first among titans Sun Yang of China, Katsuhiro Matsumoto of Japan and Duncan Scott of Great Britain, reeling in a speedy 1:44.69, but he was rendered disqualified for a flinch on the blocks.

Rapsys’ time, had it counted, would have represented the only sub-1:45 second outing besides Sun, Scott and Australia’s Clyde Lewis since 2017.
