The Fordham swimming & diving teams wrapped up their home schedule on Wednesday night with a sweep of the Iona Gaels at the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center.  The Fordham women’s defeated the Gaels, 150-75, while the Fordham men earned a 131-94 victory over Iona.

The Rams were led by the diving tandem of Stephanie Kerkeles and Christopher Craig, as each won both diving events in personal-best fashion.  Craig set a new career-high score by winning the three-meter competition with 289.80 points, and took first on the one-meter board with a season-best score of 260.93 points.  Kerkeles captured first on the one-meter board with a career-high score of 269.93 points, while having the top spot on the three-meter board with a season-best total of 258.98.

On the swimming end, the Fordham women won all nine individual events and both relays.  The nine individual event wins came from nine different swimmers.  The run started with Erin McBride in the 1000 freestyle (10:41.02), followed by Bayley Frierson in the 200 freestyle (1:56.85), Tara Brunner in the 50 freestyle (24.15), Natalie Brown in the 200 IM (2:11.32), Catherine Alabanza in the 200 butterfly (2:08.28), Noelle Theodoulou in the 100 freestyle (54.12), Michelle Martin in the 200 backstroke (2:10.00), Paulina Watson in the 500 freestyle (5:15.28), and Nele Albers in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.51).

In the women’s relays, the 400 medley relay team of Caitlin McNaryGabrielle Celia, Theodoulou, and Hannah McGee placed first in 3:59.20, while the 200 freestyle relay team of Brunner, Celia, Watson and Amelia Bullock took first in 1:39.12.

On the men’s side, the Rams had five individual swimming wins and both relay events.  Joe Mercurio won the 50 freestyle in 21.75 seconds with Isiah Magsino taking first in the 200 IM in 1:57.25.  Manny Avila Garcia had the top time in the 200 butterfly (2:00.13), while Joseph Vizza won the 100 freestyle (47.92) and Ethan D’Arcangelo took the 200 backstroke event (1:56.64).

In the men’s relays, Fordham’s team of Auston RamsayTravis Monahan, Mercurio, and Vizza won the 400 medley relay in 3:28.43, with the 200 freestyle relay team of Monahan, Mercurio, Kevin Berry, and Jack Madigan placed first in 1:26.39.

The Fordham swimming and diving team will next be in action on Saturday, January 27th, when the Rams travel to UMass for a 1:00 PM meet.

Both Iona College men’s and women’s swimming & diving programs fell to the Fordham Rams in their final non-conference dual meet of the 2017-18 season. The men’s program fell 131-94 while the women’s team fell short, 150-75.

Senior co-captain Christian Foti shined on the men’s side with a pair of individual wins in the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle; he touched the wall in 1:45.04 and 4:42.81 respectively. Sophomore Matt Anderson came on top in the 1,000-yard freestyle with the fastest time of 9:49.75. Iona’s final solo victory on the male side came from senior Christopher Vadala in the 200-yard breaststroke and his 2:21.12 time.

On the women’s side, the only individual champion was rookie Kate DiRaimoin the 200-yard breaststroke. She touched the wall first in 2:33.95. The Gaels wrapped up the event with a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Freshman Kate Flynn, junior Jessica Schmidt, sophomore Simone Sturrup, and senior Elizabeth Kaczmarek combined to touch first in 1:42.76.

The final regular season dual meet is this upcoming Saturday, Jan. 27, at Manhattan. The Gaels and Jaspers kick-off at 1 PM from Riverdale, NY. It’ll be the final tune up for the Maroon & Gold before the MAAC Championship come the second week of February.
