FINA World Cup Berlin: Hosszu warms up with fast prelims performances

FINA WORLD CUP – BERLIN

Katinka Hosszu got her nickname Iron Lady because of her monster competition programs at swim meets but according to the changed FINA World Cup rules, the swimmers are only eligible to compete in four events over a two-days World Cup stop. Additionally, the program is different at every stop, in Berlin for example, the women’s 200m IM, one of Hosszu’s best events, are not part of the competition program.

But with less races and more rest, Katinka Hosszu can improve her speed like she did in yesterday’s 400m IM when she set the second fastest SC performance ever with a time of 4:19,82.

She fired off a 56,99 in her first race in the morning heats, not far off her own 100 IM world record (56,67). Sweden’s Sarah Sjöström swam the second fastest time in 57,92.

Katinka Hosszu also dominated the 200m backstroke race where she fininished in 2:00,18 less than a second away from her world record of 1:59,23. Second place finisher Nadine Laemmler (GER) came in more than six seconds later in 2:06,35 but 2017 LC 200m backstroke World Champion Emily Seebohm (AUS) will join tonight’s final, she got a secure spot for the final, there was no need for her to waste too much energy in the prelims race.

USA’s Tom Shields entered the final of the men’s 200m butterfly as the top seed, he was clocked at 1:50,60, his personal best time stands at 1:49,05.

Ilya Shymanovich swam the fastest time in the 50m breaststroke in the morning heats with a time of 26,16 ahead of Kirill Prigoda (RUS) in 26,26.

Top seed in the 50m freestyle is Sarah Sjöström, the world record holder (23,10, set about one week ago at the World Cup stop in Moscow) hit the wall in a time of 23,22.

Danas Rapsys (LTU) set the fastest time in the 200m freestyle in 1:42,28.

And again, Katinka Hosszu came in with a top time for the 100m butterfly final, she delivered a 55,52 but it seems that Sarah Sjöström took the opportunity to advance directly into the final.

Radoslaw Kawecki (POL) touched in 50,89 in the 100m backstroke for the #1 seed for finals.

Mireia Belmonte took the top spot in the 400m freestyle, she finished in 4:02,58, Belmonte is the SC world record holder in 3:54,52.

Jenna Laukkannen (FIN) set the fastest 100m breaststroke time in 1:04,87 followed by Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson in 1:05,71.
