Versatile Elizabeth Beisel Entered In 9 Events At Olympic Trials

2016 U.S. OLYMPIC TEAM TRIALS

Elizabeth Beisel, the bubbly backstroker, IMer and sometimes mid-distance freestyler is entered in an astonishing 9 events at the U.S. Olympic Trials, per the psych sheets released yesterday.

Although it’s extremely unlikely that the 2012 Olympic medalist actually takes a splash in each and every one of those events, the fact that Beisel is weighing all her options is a sign she’s feeling good headed into Omaha. Among the 2700 meters Beisel would be swimming in prelims alone should she unlikely take on the monster schedule, are both IM events, both backstroke events, as well as the 200/400/800m freestyle races.  She’s also listed to swim the 200 butterfly and 200 breaststroke events.

Beisel will be looking to make her 3rd straight Olympic team in her signature event, the 400m IM and is a top 2 contender in the women’s 200m backstroke. We’ve picked the veteran Florida graduate to finish 1st in the former event and 2nd in the latter, but that doesn’t mean she won’t try a couple of her other entered events on for size either as a true contender or by using the prelim racing as a warm-up swim. The rub is that, aside from the 400m IM opening night, Beisel would be facing at least 2 races in every evening session, depending on how far the 23-year-old makes it in each event.

Based on the scheduling and prospects, look for Beisel to scratch at least the women’s 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and 200 freestyle, as well as the 800 freestyle as that final would land on the same evening as her 2nd main event, the 2back. In a recent interview with SwimSwam, Beisel stated that she hadn’t quite nailed her schedule down yet, but that it would probably boil down to the IM events, the 200 back, and the 400 free, with the possibility of adding one more, but she doesn’t plan on swimming all 9 events.
