After a plea last week from the Australian Olympic Committee, Brazil has given assurances that coach Scott Volkers will not be accredited for the Olympic Games.
With 8 swimmers from Volkers’ Minas Tenis club on the Brazilian Olympic Team, he might have been a top choice for the staff for Brazil’s home Olympics. The club confirmed to the BBC, though, that the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) had decided to leave Volkers out of the staff.
“The call of the coaches is a decision of CDBA (Brazilian Confederation of Water Sports) and not been announced yet,” a Minas Tenis club spokesperson said.
The spokesperson also emphasized that Volkers’ time with the club has not proven any issues, saying that “About Scott, the club has to say that his conduct has been exemplary.”
Volkers has a long resume of coaching some of Australia’s biggest swimmers, including 8-time Olympic medalist Susie O’Neill, but has been accused by three former female swimmers in Australia of sexual abuse. While Australian authorities did not believe there was enough evidence to pursue criminal charges, Volkers is no longer allowed to work with children under the age of 16.
In 2011, Volkers moved to South America, but Australia has not dropped its fight against the coach. In 2014, they said that they would deny Volkers’ accreditation to the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships in the Gold Coast. Queensland Swimming has also dropped Volkers from its Hall of Fame.
