2016 Maria Lenk Day 1 Olympic Qualifiers

2016 MARIA LENK TROPHY OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 2016 Maria Lenk Trophy meet, that is serving as the official test event for the 2016 olympics, became tonight in Rio. Day 1 of the meet was filled with a number of fast swims and FINA A cut qualification times.

In the men’s 400m IM preliminaries, no FINA A cuts were made, but in the final, Brandonn Almeida dominated the field, touching in 4:14.63, more than 2 seconds under the FINA A cut time of 4:16.71. He was the only swimmer of the meet to make the cut in this event as Japan’s Kakeru Murata touched 2nd in 4:20.55, ahead of China’s Yizhe Wang, who finished in 4:20.86.

In the women’s 100m fly, the top 3 finishers Daiene DiasDaynara Ferreira and Katarina Listopadova of Slovakia all finished under the FINA A cut qualifying time (58.74), touching in 58.07, 58.38 and 58.71 respectively. Dias and Ferreira both earned their spot on the Brazil Olympic team after none of their country mates swam the A cut at the Brazil Open.

In the men’s 400 free, no swimmers went under the FINA A cut, leaving the sole qualifier to be Luis Melo, who won the Brazil Open in 3:50.32.

More women qualified on day 1 of the meet in the 400 IM, when Joanna Maranhao pf Brazil (4:38.66), Barbora Zavadova of Czech Republic (4:42.17) and Virginia Bardach of Argentina (4:43.17) all swam under the FINA A cut time of 4:43.46.

In the men’s 100 breast, there were 5 Brazilians who went under the qualifying time of 1:00.57. Joao Gomes Jr (59.10) and Felipe Franca Silva (59.36) were the top 2 Brazilian finishers, ahead of country mates; Pedro Cardona (1:00.11), Felipe Lima (1:00.37) and Raphael Oliveria (1:00.48).
