Missouri State’s Davila Picks up Final MAC Weekly Award of Season

Missouri State senior Miguel Davila completed three season-best times and won all three races he competed in during the two-day Shamrock Invitational from Jan. 29-30 at Rolfs Aquatic Center on the campus of Notre Dame. Racing against swimmers from No. 25 Notre, Grand Canyon and Iowa, Davila made his opening appearance in the 500-yard freestyle. Davila touched the wall in a time of 4 minutes, 26.95 seconds for first place. His finish was three seconds ahead of runner-up and fellow Bear Minki Kang, while it also was the fastest time completed by a Mid-American Conference swimmer in the event this season. Davila’s success continued in the 400 IM. The Colombia native came in ahead of Grand Canyon’s Iegor Lytvenok by less than .60 seconds for a finish of 3:58.77 for first. His 400 IM time at the Invitational is the fifth fastest in the MAC this year. The MSU senior concluded the Invitational by wrapping up his third first-place finish in the 1650 free. His time of 15:27.41 was over nine seconds faster than the rest of the field and is the second fastest in the MAC to this point.

Sophomore Andrew Carlson created momentum for the Cardinals when he turned in an individual event win in the 200 freestyle with a 1:45.90 final. Carlson went on to earn a second individual event win when he marked a 4:50.35 in the 500 freestyle later in the meet. Carlson also helped the Cardinals close out the meet on a high note when he combined with Tanner Barton, Austin Green and Cole Smith for a first place finish in the 400 freestyle relay with a 3:11.30 final. The Cardinals ultimately fell 151.5-148.5 to Evansville.

During UB’s quad meet against West Virginia and nationally ranked Michigan and Ohio State, Mason Miller finished in the top-ten in four races. He helped the Bulls to fourth-place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay. His best individual performance of the day came in the 50-yard freestyle when he finished fifth with a time of 20.60. Miller swam the 100-yard butterfly in 49.73 seconds to finish in ninth overall.

Purple Aces senior Ethan O’Rourke had an unbelievable weekend of action, picking up five individual wins and a pair of relay triumphs to lead the Aces to victories over Ball State and Valparaiso.  In Friday’s meet versus the Cardinals, O’Rourke picked up victories in the 100 and 200 backstroke races along with the 200 IM.  His time of 1:55.25 in the 200 backstroke dominated the competition by over four seconds.  On Saturday, he was at it again, taking part in two relay wins while picking up a win in the 50 and 100 backstroke races.
