Day 6 in Kazan wrapped up with a thrilling battle in the men’s 800 freestyle relay that came down to the final meters. The British relay of Dan Wallace, Robert Renwick, Calum Jarvis, and James Guy fought back from an early deficit to the United States, Russia, and Australia, overtaking all three squads on the final leg of the race for the gold medal of the 2015 FINA World Championships. The United States would settle for silver in 7:04.75, followed by Australia with bronze in 7:05.34. With their victory, the Brits snapped a winning streak going back to 2005 for the Americans in the 800 free relay event.
The final time for Great Britain was 7:04.33, composed of the following splits:
- Wallace: 1:47.04
- Renwick: 1:45.98
- Jarvis: 1:46.57
- Guy: 1:44.74
Speaking enthusiastically about the race, anchor James Guy said “I know I’m a fighter and I’ll never give up. I knew I had to fight to the end. It was fantastic.” No doubt having boosted confidence from his individual 200m freestyle gold from earlier in the meet, in addition to having the fastest split of all racers in the relay, Guys says, “I’ll swim against anyone any time. I live for this. I absolutely love the sport. Going head-to-head with people, I’ll never back down.”
