COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The United States Olympic Committee board of directors today approved three new members during its meeting in Washington, D.C. Joining the board in place of outgoing members are Daniel Doctoroff, former CEO of Bloomberg LP; Steve Mesler, three-time Olympian and president/CEO of Classroom Champions; and Kevin White, vice president and director of athletics at Duke University.
“Today the USOC welcomes three new board members, who are all world-class professionals and are committed to dedicating their talent and expertise to the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic movements,” said USOC Chairman Larry Probst. “I’m confident the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic family will benefit from their leadership, experience and diverse skill sets, and we look forward to working with them in the years ahead.”
The new directors were recommended to the board by its Nominating and Governance Committee, and fill the seats of outgoing board members Bob Bowlsby, John Hendricks and Mary McCagg, who completed their elected terms in January 2015.
“Bob, John and Mary have served the Olympic and Paralympic movements with passion and dedication and we’re grateful for their leadership and years of service on our board,” said USOC CEO Scott Blackmun. “I have no doubt they will continue to positively impact the world of sport.”
The 16-member board is comprised of three representatives from both the Athletes’ Advisory Council and National Governing Bodies Council, and six independent members. The CEO and all American members of the International Olympic Committee are ex officio members of the board.
The three vacant seats were designated to be filled by one independent director, and one representative from both the NGBC and AAC. The new board member designations are as follows:
- Daniel Doctoroff (independent): Doctoroff served as CEO of Bloomberg LP from 2011-14 after joining the company as president in 2008. Previously, he served as New York deputy mayor for economic development and rebuilding, working closely with Mayor Michael Bloomberg to reverse the city’s fiscal crisis following the attacks of 9/11. Prior to joining the Bloomberg administration, he spent 14 years as managing partner of Oak Hill Capital Partners, where he founded NYC2012 and oversaw New York’s bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games.
- Steve Mesler (AAC): Mesler is a three-time Olympian in bobsled, having helped Team USA win its first gold medal in the four-man event in 62 years in 2010. He is the co-founder, president and CEO of Classroom Champions, an international education organization which connects Olympians, Paralympians and hopefuls with students in high-need schools.
- Kevin White (NGBC): White is the vice president and director of athletics at Duke University, where he also serves as an adjunct professor of business administration. With more than 33 years of experience in collegiate athletics administration, he previously served as director of athletics at the University of Notre Dame from 2000-08, during which time he held a number of prominent roles, including president of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and president of the Division I-A Athletic Directors Association. During that time, he also served on the steering committee for the Chicago bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games.
