Yale Stays Hot With Sweep of Cornell

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – With its biggest meets of the season fast approaching, the Yale men’s swimming and diving team is peaking at just the right time. The Bulldogs rolled to a 202-98 victory over Cornell at Kiphuth Pool.

First year Noah Millard captured three events – the 200, 500 and 1,000 freestyles to help lead the way. Conner Kang (200 butterfly, 200 IM) and Philippe Marcoux (50, 100 freestyle) were both double event winners.

In addition, Liam Bogart won the 100 backstroke, Alex Deng won the 100 breaststroke, Justin Whang won the 200 backstroke and Calvin Yang won the 200 breaststroke.

It was also a big day for the relay teams. Yale won both the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.

The diving events took place on Friday night.

Next up for the Bulldogs is a meet with Harvard and Princeton on Jan. 29-30 at Kiphuth Pool.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale women’s swimming and diving team stayed undefeated with a 211.5-88.5 victory over Cornell at Kiphuth Pool.

It was another dominating performance from the Bulldogs, who improved to 7-0 in dual meets.

Junseo Kim captured three events – the 200 butterfly, 200 backstroke and 100 butterfly. Ophelia Pilkinton was a double event winner, taking 100 and 200 freestyles. Other winners for Yale were Alex Massey (100 backstroke), MaryKate Buckley (100 breaststroke), Olivia Paoletti (200 breaststroke), Marlise Moesch (500 freestyle) and Vivian Weng (200 IM).

Yale also won both the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.

The diving was held on Friday night.

The Bulldogs return to Kiphuth Pool to host Princeton and Harvard on Jan. 28-29.

ITHACA, N.Y. – Despite collecting 22 top-three finishes on the day, the Cornell men’s swimming and diving team (1-5, 0-5) was bested by Yale (4-2, 3-2) by a score of 202-98 on Saturday afternoon at the Kiphuth Exhibition Pool in New Haven, Conn.

Joseph Gurski represented Cornell’s lone individual event winner on the day, touching the wall in 49.41 to win the 100 butterfly. Alan Li secured a 1-2 finish for the Big Red in the event, placing second with a time of 50.23. The butterfly duo of Gurski and Li didn’t stop there, however, as the pair also finished among the top-three in the 200 butterfly. Gurski clocked a time of 1:50.00 and Li followed in 1:54.08, placing second and third, respectively.

Sebastian Wolff collected a trio of top-three showings on Saturday afternoon, placing second in the 100 freestyle (46.68) and third in both the 100 breaststroke (57.80) and 200 IM (1:54.76). Ricardo Martinez was Cornell’s top finisher in the 200 IM, placing second in 1:53.46. Martinez also added a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:42.15).

In the backstroke events, it was Paige daCosta who couldn’t be overlooked for Cornell, as the junior finished second in the 100 backstroke (51.79) and third in the 200 backstroke (1:53.12). Van Cates finished one spot ahead of daCosta in the 200 backstroke, clinching a second place finish with a time of 1:52.17.

Jake Lawson and Jacob Bass each placed second in their respective events, with Lawson finishing as the runner-up in the 1,000 freestyle (9:41.08) and Bass finishing second in the 200 breaststroke (2:06.10).

Ian Mackey and Dominic Edwards both secured top-three finishes in their freestyle disciplines, with Mackey placing third in the 50 freestyle (21.48) and Edwards finishing third in the 500 freestyle (4:42.99). Matthew Warren added a third-place showing of his own in the 3-meter diving with 313.65 points.

The Cornell men’s swimming and diving team will return to Ithaca, N.Y. for its final home meet of the season when it hosts Brown in an Ivy League dual on Saturday, Jan. 22 at noon.

ITHACA, N.Y. – In a full weekend that saw the Big Red compete against Yale and Columbia in back-to-back days, the Cornell women’s swimming and diving team (2-5, 1-5) was defeated in both contests, falling to Yale (7-0, 5-0), 211.5-88.5, on Saturday at the Kiphuth Exhibition Pool in New Haven, Conn. and Columbia (3-3, 2-3), 172-108, on Sunday at the Percy Uris Natatorium in New York, N.Y.

The Big Red put up a fight against a strong Yale team, who advanced to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in Ivy League action with the victory, as Cornell won four individual events and tallied 14 top-three finishes on the day. Junior diver Elise Jendritz was a double-winner on Saturday, winning both the 1-meter (276.90) and 3-meter (318.23) diving competitions. Teammate Demetra Williams added a third-place finish in the 1-meter with 269.10 points.

Freshman Allie Danko and junior Melissa Parker also picked up victories in their individual events, as Danko won the 1,000 freestyle (10:25.67) and Parker touched the wall first in the 50 freestyle (24.03). Danko didn’t stop there, however, adding a runner-up finish in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:07.51.

Sophomore Priscilla Wongso notched a pair of top-three finishes in her freestyle sprinting events, joining Parker in the top-three of the 50 freestyle with a third-place finish in 24.39 while also placing third in the 100 freestyle (52.68).

Junior Aviva Muñoz and senior Allison Chang each secured two top-three showings on the day as well. Muñoz’s top finish of the weekend came in the 200 backstroke where she placed second in 2:07.14. She added a third-place finish in the 100-backstroke (58.39). Chang placed third in both the 100 breaststroke (1:08.23) and 200 breaststroke (2:24.81).

Sophomore Anna Gruvberger notched a third-place finish of her own, clocking in at 58.95 in the 100 butterfly.

It was two familiar faces in Danko and Muñoz that posted Cornell’s top performances against Columbia on Sunday, as Danko placed third in the 1,000 freestyle (10:42.00) and Muñoz finished third in the 200 backstroke (2:06.12), cutting a second off her time from a day before.

The Cornell women’s swimming and diving team will host Brown for its final Ivy League dual of the season on Friday, Jan. 21 at noon in Ithaca, N.Y.
