The live stream for the 2022 World Swimming Championships in Short Course Meters will begin working for the evening session of day 1 and is expected to work for the rest of the meet a representative for World Aquatics (formerly FINA) told SwimSwam on Tuesday morning.
The World Aquatics stream on YouTube is meant for countries where there is no rights-holding broadcaster airing the meet, which includes the United States. But American fans were left scrambling when they logged on Monday evening (US time) searching for the stream.
While it was working in other countries (including Australia, where it is already being broadcast on Channel Nine), the stream was geoblocked in the US. This forced American users to use VPNs like TunnelBear or bootlegged streams to watch the meet.
These sort of early-meet hiccups have become the unfortunate norm for elite swimming competitions, straining the dedicated fanbase’s desire to watch them. Fortunately, they usually get straightened away for the remainder of the meet.
