67th SETTE COLLI TROPHY

On the final day of the 67th Sette Colli Trophy in Rome, Gretchen Walsh took four hundredths off the world record in the 50 freestyle, stopping the clock in 23.55.

WOMEN’S 50 FREE – FINAL

GOLD – Gretchen Walsh (USA), 23.55 *World Record*
SILVER  – Sarah Sjostrom (SWE), 23.86
BRONZE – Sara Curtis (ITA), 24.09 *Italian Record*

The former record of 23.59 was just nine days old, and was set by Walsh’s teammate and training partner Kate Douglass with Walsh in the next lane.

For those who missed the race live, since streaming was hard to find for the meet, here is a video of the race courtesy of Quinn Burke on YouTube.

Former World Record holder Sarah Sjostrom was also in the race, finishing 2nd in a blistering 23.86, and Italy’s Sara Curtis, who trains at Virginia with Walsh and Douglass, set a new Italian Record to finish 3rd in 24.09.

You can also see what Walsh said about the race afterwards.

It’s amazing Gretchen has never gotten called for 15m violations. Her breakout timing is always perfect! I thought she was past 15m on that, but slowed it down and am convinced she came up at 14.95 m! Wish the video had more of the middle of the race 🙁
