On the final day of the 67th Sette Colli Trophy in Rome, Gretchen Walsh took four hundredths off the world record in the 50 freestyle, stopping the clock in 23.55.

The former record of 23.59 was just nine days old, and was set by Walsh’s teammate and training partner Kate Douglass with Walsh in the next lane.

Former World Record holder Sarah Sjostrom was also in the race, finishing 2nd in a blistering 23.86, and Italy’s Sara Curtis, who trains at Virginia with Walsh and Douglass, set a new Italian Record to finish 3rd in 24.09.

It’s amazing Gretchen has never gotten called for 15m violations. Her breakout timing is always perfect! I thought she was past 15m on that, but slowed it down and am convinced she came up at 14.95 m! Wish the video had more of the middle of the race 🙁
