U.S. Coast Guard Academy Adds Lucy Smutny to Class of 2025

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Lucy Smutny from Cutler Bay, Florida has announced she will swim for the United States Coast Guard Academy beginning next fall. She plans to study civil engineering at the Academy.

“I am so honored and excited to be accepted into the United States Coast Guard Academy. I am looking forward to the academic challenges and team atmosphere.”

Smutny comes from a big swim family of six swimming siblings (Matthew, Luke, Mary, Lucy, Maddie and Lydia), all homeschooled, and both parents swam in college. Luke graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 2020 where he was on the men’s swimming and diving team. Mary is a rising junior on the University of Texas women’s team.

Smutny swims during the Florida high school season with Cutler Bay Senior High School. She has been attached to the swim team for three years and was a starter last season on the Cutler Bay girls’ water polo team, as well. She does her club swimming with South Florida Aquatic Club (SOFLO) and specializes mainly in back, free, and fly. At the 2021 Florida Gold Swimming Senior Short Course Championships in March, she picked up a slew of PBs (100/200 free, 100/200 back, and 100 fly) while finaling in the 200 free (23rd), 100 back (5th), and 200 back (11th). In high school season, she updated her times in the 50 free and 500 free.

Top SCY times:

  • 50 back – 27.67
  • 100 back – 58.83
  • 200 back – 2:09.17
  • 50 free – 25.45
  • 100 free – 55.24
  • 200 free – 1:57.00
  • 500 free – 5:06.61
  • 100 fly – 1:01.52

Smutny, who would have been the Bears’ top backstroker and mid-distance freestyler last season, will join Kathryn Harding in the class of 2025. She would have scored in the A finals of the 200/500 free and 100/200 back at 2020 NEWMAC Championships.
