[Note: this article has been updated. Khanh Seaton trains under head coach Piankhi Gibson at Golden State Aquatic.]
Khanh Seaton, a rising senior at Castro Valley High School in Castro Valley, California, has announced her verbal commitment to the University of California, Berkeley, beginning in the 2027-28 school year. Seaton had originally pledged to swim and study at the University of Michigan.
Seaton made the announcement on social media, writing:
“Staying closer to home!
fter a lot of time and thought, I’m extremely grateful to announce my commitment to swim and study at the University of California, Berkeley! I’m so thankful for my family, friends, coaches, and teammates for supporting me throughout this journey. I would also like to thank the coaches at UC Berkeley for this opportunity. So excited for this next chapter!!
Go Bears 🐻”
Seaton is coming off a big junior year high school season. At the North Coast Section Championships, she won the 50 free and 100 free with PBs of 22.02 and 48.58, respectively. She also led off the medley relay with a 25.40 backstroke and split 21.83 on the 4×50 free relay. The following weekend, she won the 50 free (22.22) and 100 free (48.22) at the CIF State Championships, lowering her newly-minted PB in the 100 by another .36.
The sprint specialist, who trains at Golden State Aquatic, has been on an absolute tear over the last year. At the end of the summer of 2025, Seaton was a Futures qualifier in the 50/100 free, 100 back, and 200 IM. She’d begun the 2024-25 short-course season with PBs in the 50 free (24.00), 200 back (2:14.08), 100 breast (1:16.55), 200 breast (2:45.93), and 200 IM (2:17.37). A week later, she broke 24 seconds for the first time in the 50 free (23.93), improved her 100 breast by 1.9 (1:14.62), and hit a PB of 1:06.29 in the 100 fly. By the end of the season, she had chipped away at her times in all her events, eventually dropping to 23.34 in the 50 free, 50.84 in the 100 free, 56.82 in the 100 back, 1:07.92 in the 100 breast, 57.26 in the 100 fly, and 2:06.22 in the 200 IM.
A year later, she now owns PBs of:
- 50 free – 22.02
- 100 free – 48.22
- 50 back – 25.15
- 100 back – 55.32
- 50 fly – 24.47
- 100 fly – 54.80
- 200 IM – 2:04.00
Seaton will join Mia Su, Alba Arnall, and Sum Yiu Li in the Golden Bears’ class of 2031.

First of of all, congratulations to you, Ms. Seaton…very exciting time in your swimming career, showcasing your incredible focus, stellar improvements, and your drive to be so speedy! Needless to say, your future looks very bright. Michigan and Cal are outstanding programs + academic institutions, and those at Cal are very fortunate to have you join them.
Khanh’s sprint focus reminds me of a few other recent sprinters from Cal (Stephanie Akakabota and Sydney Griscavage), neither of whom were big-time recruits, yet they ended up being fast enough to be called upon to swim in sprint relays at NCAAs….very impressive. Thinking Khanh’s trajectory will be even more impactful, as she begins at Cal with faster times than both Akakabota… Read more »
Those are terrible comps from a swimming perspective. Sure, they are both Cal sprinters but Khanh is already faster than both of them were at Cal as a HS junior.
Her times are more in line with Camille Spink / Julie Mishler level recruits at the same age.
I agree…was looking at focusing on Cal training program/results, not specifially about comparing KS to other athletes with similar times. My take is that she has a huge upside and it will be fun to watch her results. You bring up good swimmers/times to compare against who swim at different programs, so will be fun to see how her times match up to those athletes you’ve mentioned.
Those were reasonable comps a year ago, but she has made a massive leap this past year that puts her in a different tier of recruit.
I’d be surprised if she isn’t in the top 20 when Swimswam re-ranks 2027 recruits.
Agreed….hence the excitment for her development at that program. I would think top 20 is certainly highly possible….maybe much closer to where Adalynn Biegler ( #10/Tennessee) is currently positioned. With one more year of training/times, will be interesting to see where Khanh (and Bielger) land.
Go Bears!! Look forward to seeing you train and compete with an elite sprint group.
Great pickup for the bears! Her progression is 🔥
Damn she was 50.8 in the 100 coming into junior year and now 48.2?
Dirty recruiting wins again
Do you have any specifics or just talking out of your *ss?
Everyone on swimswam talks out of their ass
hey!
We’re talking about “dirty recruiting” not 2 months after Bowe was caught red handed bad mouthing his biggest rival?
Albany Armada!
I’m always excited to see examples of the Cal women reloading. Those freestyle relays are going to be formidable in a couple years time. Congratulations Khanh and Go Bears!
IQ test and she passed
I meant a swimmer from California staying in California. Not a diss on Michigan
Not just staying in California. The Albany team she trains with is located about 3 miles from the UC Berkeley campus.
Actually she trains at UC Berkeley with a small team
Cal’s got a club team again!?
