Ames, Iowa – The TCU women’s swimming and diving team defeated Iowa State 162-138 on Saturday, Jan. 20 at the Beyer Pool in second conference win of the season.
The Horned Frogs tallied a total of 10 gold, eight silver and eight bronze medals.
IN THE POOL
The meet began with a Frog win in the 200 Medley Relay when Rylee Moore, Nina Vadovicova, Jeanne Dahmen and Olivia Rhodes swam a time of 1:44.81.
Jordan Edwards earned her first win of the season in the 1000 Freestyle swimming to a time of 10:22.39. Mikayla Popham followed her in the 200 Freestyle adding nine point for the Frogs touching the wall at 1:53.00.
Tania Quaglieri had a career day winning all three individual events that she swam in. The graduate student was victorious in the 100 Back touching the wall at 55.06. She went on to win the 200 Back with a time of 2:02.37 and the 100 Fly 55.91.
Claire Chahbandour earned the gold medal in the 100 Breaststroke touching the wall at 1:04.28. Rhodes was the 50 Free champion with a time of 23.59. Giorgia Vavalle won the 200 Breaststroke with a time of 2:21.99 to add the last nine points on the board for the Frogs.
ON THE BOARDS
Emma Lacarda Herrera earned her first win as a Horned Frog in the 3-meter diving event. She scored a career high and earned an NCAA zone cut with a score of 311.85.
Lauren Cey earned the silver medal on the 3-meter with a score of 306.75.
UP NEXT
The Horned Frogs will head South to Austin, Texas for the Sterkel Classic hosted by the University of Texas on Feb. 2-3.

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (3-3, 0-1 Big 12) lost their first Big 12 matchup of the season against TCU (3-1, 2-1 Big 12) by a close score of 162-138.
“We started off a bit slow early but we came back strong and started winning key races and the relay to close out the meet.” head coach Duane Sorenson said.
The Cyclones started the meet off with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay with a team made up of Emma Kuhn, Paige Hanley, Carley Caughron, and Andie Quirke. The relay team finished with a time of 1:44.95, less than two tenths of a second off the first-place finishers.
Kuhn had a strong day for Iowa State starting with a win in the 200 IM at a final time of 2:07.38. The freshman also secured two second-place finishes across both the 100 and 200 backstroke events.
“She’s a tremendous racer and competitor.” Sorenson said. “The sky’s the limit for her if she continues to stay focused and gain confidence in these races.
Brinley Horras had another record breaking day in the pool, finishing at No. 19 in the all-time points leaderboard after a first-place finish in the 500 free. Horras is two points away from reaching No. 18 and less than 70 points away from cracking into the top 12.
“Brinley is super competitive and gives her best no matter who she is facing and that’s why she is so high on this list.” Sorenson said.
Corinne Guist led the Cyclones in the 200 free with a second-place finish of 1:53.10, only one tenth of a second from first place. Ashley Bengtson followed close behind in third at 1:54.42.
Guist would later finish in second place in the 500 free, less than one second behind first.
Winter Craig won the first event of the day for the Cyclones in the 200 fly. Craig led all swimmers with a 2:06.42 finish in the event.
In the 50 free, a combination of Caughron (23.97), Lydia McClugage (24.25), and Quirke (24.42) took second, third, and fourth-place to give the Cyclones some much needed points in the first half of the meet.
Quirke would later go on to win the 100 free at a time of 52.77.
The Iowa State diving team had a strong day on the 1-meter board by taking the top three spots in the event. Lauren Kimball led the way for the Cyclones with a personal best score of 300.20, while Joscelyn Farner (286.50) and Kate Mitchell (272.95) finished in second and third place.
“I thought we had a really strong day on 1-meter as a team and showed some great resilience in bouncing back after missing a few things on the 3-meter.” head diving coach Jeff Warrick said.
Mitchell would go on to add a personal best in 3-meter diving with a 294.10 score. Freshman Annie McCann also had her best performance on the 3-meter board as a Cyclone with a PR score of 252.30.
“It’s big for Kate and Annie to come out her and take what they have been crafting and learning in practice and show it in these events against great divers from TCU to build confidence.” Warrick said.
The Cyclones earned six zone diving cuts across both events during the meet.
The meet finished with a win for the Cyclones in the 400 free relay at a time of 3:31.55.
Iowa State will continue Big 12 conference play next weekend in Morgantown against West Virginia. The Cyclones will also face off with Villanova as a part of a three-team dual.
