Coach Jim Ellis formed PDR in 1971, the first African-American swim team in the US. In 2007 Ellis’ career was the subject of the feature film PRIDE.

Freeland was a member of the famed PDR Swim Team of Philadelphia coached by Jim Ellis in the 1980s that was immortalized in the Lionsgate film Pride.
