Great Britain Leads Euro Juniors Medal Table As Records Fall on Day 1 of Racing

2026 EUROPEAN JUNIOR SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Great Britain took an early lead at the 2026 European Junior Championships, topping the medal table with two golds after night one of racing.

Amalie Smith secured Great Britain’s first gold in record-breaking fashion, successfully defending her championship title in the women’s 400 IM with a time of 4:35.32 and setting a new meet record to kick off the session. Smith broke her own championship record in the event, having set the standard at the 2025 competition with a time of 4:37.02.

The country’s second gold came in the very last event of the night, as the team of Emma Wood, Theodora Taylor, Hannah Capron and Smith raced to a victory in the women’s 400 free relay. The squad threw down a time of 3:37.35, breaking both the European Junior record and championship record in the event.

Also picking up a gold medal on night one was the neutral athletes delegation, who secured the championship title in the men’s 400 free. The team of Bogdan Toropkin, Egor Proshin, Matvei Miliav and Mikhail Shcherbakov combined for a blazing time of 3:12.75 and broke the world junior record in the event.

The neutral athletes also brought home two bronze medals, taking 3rd in the women’s 400 free relay and the women’s 400 IM, while Great Britain placed 3rd in the men’s 400 free relay.

Italy walked away from night one with two silver medals under its belt, courtesy of the men’s 400 free relay team of Christian Tassan-Caser, Andrea Lucarelli, Damiano Cappellazzo and Francesco Ceolin, and the women’s 400 free relay team of Alessandra Leoni, Caterina Santambrogio, Penelope Olga Lopez-Casula and Alessandra Mao.

Hungary secured a spot on the medal table with a silver medal performance in the women’s 400 IM, with Vivien Jackl snagging the runner-up spot in 4:37.47.
