Patrick Sammon of the USA swam to a new Mare Nostrum record in the men’s 100 freestyle during prelims in Barcelona, touching in a 47.88. That broke the previous record of a 47.91 set by Hwang Sunwoo of South Korea at the 2024 stop in Monaco. Prior to that, the record of a 48.08 from Nathan Adrian (USA) had stood for 10 years.
Split Comparison
| Patrick Sammon | Hwang Sunwoo | |
| 50 | 23 | 23.08 |
| 100 | 24.88 | 24.83 |
| 47.88 | 47.91 |
Sammon was out slightly faster than Hwang was in 2024 and was out fast enough to get under the record.
The 22 year old Sammon has had a strong showing during the Mare Nostrum tour, highlighted by a lifetime best in the 200 free with a 1:46.48 to win the 200 free in Canet. He lowered that time again just yesterday with a 1:46.22 to earn the win here in Barcelona.
Sammon entered the day with a season best 47.90 and will still sit at #13 in the world so far this season with his swim from this morning. His lifetime best is a 47.47 from 2025 US Summer Nationals, a swim that punched his ticket to represent the US at the 2025 World Championships. He currently sits as the 5th fastest American this season and is slated to swim the 100 free at Pan Pacs in August.

Nice.Go Patrick! Sprint freestyle continues to be the strongest area of USA Men’s swiming.
Quite an honor to hold a Mare Nostrum record in an event where a breakthrough swim by Alexander Popov was the world record for over 6 years (’94 into 20000
With probably only 5 slots in the 100 feee it’s going to take faster than a 47.40 to make the US team.
Unlikely given the only heat ever to have 5 sub47.4 was the Rome 09 final. Even the WC25 final only had 4
A lot can happen in three years. And the field in this event is clearly getting quicker/deeper across time.
I’ll go with more likely than not
5th in 2021 = 48.22
5th in 2024 = 47.82
It seems unlikely to be slower than 2024, there’s some space between 47.82 and 47.39 but not that much.
Did anyone find out what’s going on with Alexy?
An unwise question to even consider until after Pan Pacs, unless you have some inside information of an issue.
Why is that unwise his 100 was literally a 51 and 50 22 mid lol.
