Egor Kornev Continues Tear With 46.99 100 free, 22.59 50 Fly Russian Records

2026 RUSSIAN SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The swimming world has had its eyes on 22-year-old Egor Kornev this week after he threw down Russian records in the 50 freestyle over the last two days, ultimately bringing the mark to 21.06.

This evening, Kornev added two more Russian records to his repertoire. To start the evening off, he dropped a 46.99 in the 100 free semi to become the first Russian and seventh man overall to break the coveted 47-second barrier. The previous national mark belonged to Kliment Kolesnikov, who clocked a 47.11 in at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Prior to today, Kornev had a best time of 47.29.

50 22.51 22.52
100 46.99 (24.48) 47.11 (24.59)

Though Kornev is more of a pure sprinter than Kolesnikov was, the lion’s share of the record improvement came from Kornev’s back-half, as he came home in 24.48.

With this swim, Kornev burgeons to #1 in the world rankings this season by a whopping four tenths of a second. American Chris Guiliano cedes his previous #1 spot to the Russian.

To top off a third straight evening of headline-making, Kornev put up a 22.59 in the 50 butterfly semifinal. This broke Oleg Kostin‘s 22.62 national record in the event, which he accomplished at this same meet and same pool in 2023. This chops an incredible half second off Kornev’s 22.97 PR from only two months ago. He snatches the #1 spot in the world for this event as well, bypassing soon-to-be U.S.-representing swimmer Ilya Kharun. According to the session timeline, less than an hour separated his 100 free and 50 fly.

It seems he became the first person to swim the first 50 meters in the 21-second range without straining himself.

You have to swim really fast if you don’t want to be conscripted into the Russian infantry these days.

Took 3 breaths during it. Trying to think of who else takes that many…

I think Gary Hall did 2 but might have been 3.
Dara Torres just breathed 3s.
Anyone else?

I don’t think Gary took any breaths towards the end of his career.

I can’t think of anyone that’s in the A finals at these big National/International meets that take any breaths.

Egor Kornev is the real deal.

Can’t wait for his battle vs Popovici in 100 free at Europeans, while he’ll eat everyone else for breakfast in 50 free (euros).

Is Russia invited to Euros? Not banned any longer?

That the guy’s doing well in RUS Nationals doesn’t necessarily infer his times in the upcoming EU Championships that could be a touchstone for all hopefuls, e.g. chlorine daddy, Grousset etc.
