Ohio State Synchro Wins 31st National Championship

Ohio State repeated as national champions Saturday as the U.S. Collegiate National Championships came to a close and the U.S. Senior National Championships began.

OSU won its 31st overall national synchronized swimming championship with 96 points. Stanford finished second with 90 followed by third-place Lindenwood at 72.

OSU’s Monica Velazquez-Stiak was the Individual High Point Award winner. The senior Buckeye and Arizona native won three medals – two golds and a silver – at the championships.

Squads representing OSU finished first and third in the team free final. The gold medal-winning Buckeye team scored 84.8667 points, while the third-place OSU team had 81.667. Stanford won silver by totaling 84.8000 points.

Stanford’s Clare McGovern won gold in solo free with 83.4000 points. OSU’s Laila Huric was second at 82.8000, and Camille Guerre of the University of the Incarnate Word was third with 79.7333.

OSU’s Alyssa Hoying and Velazquez-Stiak won the duet free final, scoring 83.7667 points. Two Stanford duets finished second and third: Erica Slavin and Caitlin Klauer (83.5000), and Rachel Hyon and Jacklyn Luu (82.9000).

In the trio free final, Stanford’s McGovern, Slavin and Klauer took gold with 83.4333 points, followed by OSU’s Noelle St. John, Hoying and Velazquez-Stiak (82.4000) and Lindenwood’s Kyra HoevertzShelby Kasse and Rebecca Richardson (79.7667).

The U.S. Senior National Championships began Saturday with solo, duet, and team tech competitions and will conclude with the finals on Sunday. Both championships are being held at the Oro Valley Aquatic Center.
