NCAA Wrap Up: Michael Chadwick “It was the perfect storm” (Video)

Reported by Robert Gibbs.

100 FREESTYLE – FINALS

Top 3:

  1. Caeleb Dressel, 40.00
  2. Michael Chadwick, 40.95
  3. Ryan Held, 41.21

So close, and yet so far.  Caeleb Dressel swam the fastest 100 free we’ve ever seen by 0.46 seconds, touching in exactly 40.00 and coming tantalizingly close to cracking that seemingly impossible barrier.

An incredible field finished behind Dressel, with all eight men once again finishing under 42 seconds.  Leading the way was Missouri senior Michael Chadwick, whose 40.95 now makes him the 4th-fastest ever in the event and was the 6th-fastest performance ever.  NC State junior Ryan Held touched in 41.21, moving up him to 7th-fastest ever in the event.

The rest of the field touched within 0.09 of each other.  USC junior Dylan Carter touched in 41.76, while teammate Santo Condorelli and Longhorn Brett Ringgold tied for 5th with 41.77.  Sam Perry of Stanford and Blake Pieroni of Indiana rounded finished in 41.80 and 41.85 respectively.

It doesn’t look like this event will get any easier next year, as seven of the eight A-finalists are juniors, with Chadwick the only senior.

Chadwick did have a very strong 100 free – very efficient above thew water . he hasn’t got a very interesting stroke to watch but its efficient , thats clear .

He had some great relay swims, too. Great meet overall.

0.94s time drop for Chadwick this SCY season compared to last season
0.83s for Pieroni
0.48s for Held
0.46s for Dressel

LCM records from last year
Chadwick 48.89
Pieroni 48.78
Held 48.26
Dressel 47.91

Chadwick, Pieroni and Held are 21. Dressel is 20.
It’s been a while in my opinion that US men’s sprint didn’t have such a strong group of young sprinters aged between 20 and 21. Add Adrian and you can have next summer 5 Americans in 48 low or better. And the next wave of teenagers is coming with Rooney 49.13), Hoffer (49.69), Kibler (50.13), Craig (49.41), Becker (49.84), Farris (50.29 last summer and considering his progression since then….) or Krueger (49.61).

Corrections
Chadwick’s LCM record is 48.87 from 2015. He was in 48.96 last year.
Rooney’s LCM record is 48.87 from 2015.
And I forgot to mention Anthony Ervin in the next wave of young US sprinters. 🙂

Well done BOBO – i think and feel the same as u do . Usa hasn’t got for a long time now a squad of pure sprinters like those 4 – who could seriously do damages on the 400 free – this summer and in the years to come . They now have a huge potential for both relays ( 400 and 800 free relays ) to be great . U add Adrian & Ervin and u still got 2 very fast veterans . Wow , Impressive !!

Didn’t Conger have some 47.7 splits a couple of years ago? Considering his improvement in the 200 free LCM he’s also a contender

I wouldn’t rule out Haas getting down to 48 low. He’s developed a lot more speed since he dropped the 1650, and the fewer the turns (because of his underwaters), the better.

Coleman Hodges

Coleman started his journey in the water at age 1, and although he actually has no memory of that, something must have stuck. A Missouri native, he joined the Columbia Swim Club at age 9, where he is still remembered for his stylish dragon swim trunks. After giving up on …
