Michael Gorey Flips Commitment To Alabama, Taking Gap Year To Arrive In 2026

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Michael Gorey has flipped his commitment to Alabama. Gorey had originally committed to Arizona State in December 2023 before flipping to Texas in April 2024 with a start date of fall 2025. He now will take a gap year and arrive at Alabama in fall 2026.

“After a few conversations with Bob, I took to heart his encouragement and advice, and took a gap year; I am grateful I did so. In addition to taking a few classes, gaining experience through an internship with a PE firm, and cooking (I make a whipped cream flight), most important has been my ability to support my family in relocating back to Nashville due to my mom’s health conditions. It’s been great reconnecting with friends, training with NAC, and I am looking forward to a great year.

Next year I am very excited to join the Crimson Tide! Huge shout out to Coaches Margo, Andy, Mike and the entire Alabama coaching staff for all of their support!”

Gorey finished his senior year at Carmel High School this past spring and swam on the team’s 200 free and 200 medley relays that earned state titles. He also was 8th in the 100 breast in a 56.59 as well as 6th in the 200 IM in a 1:50.03.

He most recently competed at the long course Indiana State Championships while competing for Carmel Swim Club but told SwimSwam that he plans to train with Nashville Aquatics Club going forward. While at Indiana States, he swam to lifetime bests in all four of his events. He posted a 4:28.99 in the 400 IM for 2nd and a 2:06.89 in prelims of the 200 IM for 3rd. He also was 4th in the 200 breast in a best time of a 2:19.06 as well as 7th in the 100 breast in a 1:04.99.

Best SCY times:

  • 200 IM: 1:46.92
  • 400 IM: 3:54.82
  • 100 breast: 55.48
  • 200 breast: 2:01.39
  • 50 free: 20.74
  • 100 free: 45.76
  • 200 free: 1:39.25

The Alabama men finished 6th out of 11 teams at the 2025 SEC Championships with 667 points. Charlie Hawke led the way with 67 individual points and was highlighted by a 3rd place in the 200 free with a 1:30.62.

Based on his best times, Gorey is not far off what it took to final at the conference level. It took a 1:44.91 in the 200 IM and a 3:47.63 in the 400 IM to earn a second swim. The team only scored 3 points in the 400 IM at SECs this past year, their second lowest of any swimming event.

Gorey will arrive next fall as a member of the class of 2030 along with Gunnar Hansen, Carter Wright, Zach Parent, Alex Parent, Jack Grimley, and Bogdan Zverev. Gorey’s sister, Faith Gorey, will arrive in 2027 as a member of the class of 2031.
