15-year-old Elmbrook Swim Club swimmer Maggie Wanezek went down to the wire with Irvine Novaquatics 14-year-old Teagan O’Dell in the women’s 100 back A final in Irvine tonight. The pair practically swam stroke-for-stroke through the race, with Wanezek managing to get her hand on the wall in 1:00.84, just 0.04 seconds ahead of O’Dell.

The swim marked a personal best for Wanezek, in addition to her first title of the meet. Her previous best sat at 1:01.20, which she swam in early May of this year. This morning, Wanezek finished behind O’Dell in 1:01.83.

The biggest difference-maker in Wanezek improving upon her previous best time from May was her 2nd 50. Back in May, she was actually out 0.09 seconds faster than she was tonight. However, Wanezek managed to improve her closing 50 by 0.45 seconds tonight, resulting in the personal best.

With the swim, Wanezek has now risen to #16 all-time for 15-16 girls, and she’s still just 15. Here are the all-time rankings for 13-14 girls, #11-20:

Additionally, Wanezek is now the #11 performer all-time among 15-year-old girls in the LCM 100 back.

Wanezek was also a member of the Elmbrook Swim Club women’s 200 medley relay, which swam a time Trial on Thursday, shattering the girls 15-18 National Age Group Record. Wanezek swam a 28.54 backstroke leg on that relay.
