California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) sectional meets are on tap for this week, but one big name won’t be competing.
Luka Mijatovic, who in March swam the fastest time ever in the 1000 free and became the third-fastest performer of all-time in the 500 free, has not entered this weekend’s CIF North Coast Section Championship meet, scheduled for Friday and Saturday at College of Marin.
Mijatovic was the state champion in both the 200 free and 500 free at last year’s CIF state meet swimming for Foothill High School in Pleasanton. He also won the 200 free (1:34.44) and 500 free (4:14.17) at last year’s sectional meet.
Committed to Texas, Mijatovic is a junior who has one more season of high school swimming left, should he opt to compete at that level.
With Mijatovic out of the field, it obviously creates an opportunity for others to step into the forefront. Here are some notable swimmers to watch at the North Coast sectional meet:
- Brooke Bennett, a senior at Granada who has committed to Georgia, is seeded 1st in the girls’ 200 IM and 2nd in the 500 free. Bennett is the defending state champion in the 500 free, but is seeded 2nd at the Sectional meet behind Carondelet sophomore Bella Ferguson. Bennett was 6th in the 200 IM at the state meet last year.
- Also in the girls’ competition, Las Lomas junior Tayla Campanile, a BYU commit who was 10th in the state last year in the 100 breast, is the top seed in that event at the sectional.
- On the boys’ side, Amador Valley junior Cade Vieler, who has committed to Princeton, is seeded 1st in both the 100 free and 100 back. Vieler competed in the 100 back and 200 free at last year’s state meet.
- Ben Nonaka, a senior at Northgate who has committed to Illinois-Chicago, is seeded 1st in the 200 IM and 3rd in the 100 back in the boys’ event. Nonaka was 6th in the 200 IM and 18th in the 100 back at last year’s state meet.

it feels like he covertly retired himself from the 1500 based on his recent time (slower than his Aug 2024 time–how is that even possible?) Based on his 200, 500, 1000, 1650 and 800M free times mere months ago. This 1500 should have been sub 15min. ,but the 50 year old 15-16 boys record of 15:03 still stands. swimswams’ conversion calculator reflects it should have been a 14;47 time. .based on his 1650 mere months ago of 14:30. Under water distance/dolphin kicks off each wall SHOULD be a factor when calculating the conversion times. Is this why Florida wasn’t in his top 3 considerations? No interest in swimming the 1500 anymore? No doubt Bob will ‘kill him’ (in practices) with… Read more »
Dude… just…. what??
it feels like he covertly retired from the 1500 fr based on his most recent time (slower than his Aug 2024 time-how was THAT possible?) .. in compared to the fast 1650, 1000, 800M and 500 mere months ago. .BTW, your conversion calculator reflects it should be a 14:47 (under water distance off the walls SHOULD be a consideration in the calculations) but this way the 50 year old record by Bobby Hackett of 15:03 15-16 boys still stands. Is THIS why Florida wasn’t even in his top 3 considerations? Bob’s gonna ‘kill him’ (in practice) with 2-flys, 4-IMs,200/500s and serious under water work. .but he will still be swimming the mile in college (no way around that). .20 seconds… Read more »
Would love to see him pop something crazy at NCS, but he is kind of above high school meets at this point so I don’t really have a problem with it.
Agreed. I think it’s good for him to focus on LCM now
Sacramento PSS is May 20. He’s probably focusing on that
Yeah he’s mentioned he’s going to this meet in the interview with Coleman.
When he did that interview with Coleman he mentioned the meets he was gonna be swimming and I don’t think he mentioned this one
Maybe I missed something but I don’t remember him mentioning anything about HS swimming
He swam for PLS at far westerns so this was definitely known.
This feels like a non-sequitur to the non-indoctrinated. Can you enlighten us?
I think the implication is that he would have had to be unattached per CIF rules during the high school season if he were doing the high school season, and because he wasn’t, it implied he wasn’t doing the high school season.
(I don’t know the rule intimately enough to know if there’s a loophole where a swimmer could not compete in the first half of HS season, compete attached, then just show up for championship season).
You are correct. No loopholes
Are there also restrictions on where he is allowed to practiceduring the high school season? Swimming unattached in USS swim meets during the high school season would not seem to be a huge reason for not swimming for his high school.
It’s more about there was no reason to swim unattached as they didn’t intend on swimming HS. The coach and athlete have a different target and meet schedule planned.
HISWIMCOACH wasn’t painting it as a reason for not swimming high school.
He was painting it as a sign/foreshadowing that it was happening.
Good observation
