Kristian Gkolomeev Resets 50 & 100 Free Greek Records At ISL Match 10

2020 INTERNATIONAL SWIMMING LEAGUE – MATCH #10

LA Current swimmer Kristian Gkolomeev reset a pair of Greek National Records during the ISL’s tenth match from Budapest, lowering marks in both the 50 and 100 freestyle.

The 27-year-old first broke the 50 record on day one, clocking 20.89 to erase his record of 20.97 set in Match 5 when he became the first Greek man under 21 seconds. Prior to that, he had held the record at 21.02 from 2017.

That placed the former Alabama alum second in the race behind Caeleb Dressel (20.52) of the Cali Condors.

Turning the page to day two of Match 10, Gkolomeev rocketed to another National Record of 46.73 in the 100 free, improving his mark of 47.17 set back in Match 1. That placed him fifth in the race, with Dressel winning in 45.56.

Gkolomeev followed that swim up by breaking 47 seconds for a second time from a flat-start, doing so on the lead-off leg of LA’s mixed free relay in 46.87.

Gkolomeev was a three-time NCAA champion with the Crimson Tide, tying for the 50 free win in 2014, claiming the 100 free in 2015, and anchoring his team to victory in the 200 medley relay in 2016.

Dressel and Gkolomeev raced head-to-head several times back in college, including going 1-2 in the 50 free in 2015 when Dressel won as a freshman. In 2016, Gkolomeev was third in both the 50 and 100 free, with Dressel claiming the titles.
