Kolesnikov, Zirk, Scratch 50 Back Heats on World Juniors Day 3

6th FINA World Junior Swimming Championships

For the third day in a row, Kliment Kolesnikov, who had been seeded #1, will not be present in his event. This time it’s the 50 back, where he holds the World Junior Record (24.94). His absence makes USA’s Michael Andrew the new top seed. Andrew is also #1 in the next event, the 50 free. Also missing from the 50 back heats will be Estonia’s Kregor Zirk, seeded #21 with 26.81. In the men’s 800 free, Russia’s Maksim Aleksandrov, seeded 14th with 8:13.01, is not on the heat sheets. All the other men’s events should have all the circle-seeded athletes in their assigned lanes.

The only top-24 women missing from Friday’s heats will be in the 200 back: #17 Anastasiya Shkurdai of Belarus (2:14.49) and Julia Koluch of Poland (2:15.48).

So Michael Andrew is ranked #1 in both the 50 back and 50 free, but he is a breaststroker/IMer? If this race pace stuff continues to work, things are going to start getting really interesting.

This race pace stuff isn’t working though, not anymore at least as evident by both his breaststroke and IM yesterday. He was well off his best in the 100 breast and he died is his IM after 60 meters. It’s a tough double to do but he completely fell apart where many of his US team mates are handling doubles and triples very well. He has no base to fall back on and being good at 50’s (only one of which is an olympic level event) is not a fantastic plan for someone his age
