The final day of competition at the Lenexa Sectional saw athletes compete in the 100 back, 200 IM, and 50 free, as well as a timed final 1500 free.
In the women’s 1500 free, Susie Lee, a 15-year old, came away with the win by a margin of seven seconds over Allison Webber of Springfield Aquatics. Lee finished in 17:30.14, her best time in the event. In the men’s race, Alec Enyeart won by an even larger margin, beating runner-up Chris Callan by nearly 13 seconds. The 2022 University of Minnesota commit stopped the clock in 15:59.51.
Kobie Melton cruised to a win in the women’s 100 back over fellow University of Arkansas teammate Tayde Sansores De La Fuent. A finalist in the event at the 2021 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships, Melton touched in 1:02.51 to De La Fuent’s 1:03.37.
Melton wasn’t done after coming away with the fastest time in the 100 back, as she went on the close the meet with a win in the 50 free. Holding off Avery Karl of Empire KC Swim Club (25.93), Melton touched in a time of 25.77. Like the 100 back, Melton also made finals at the SEC Championships this past spring in the event. She finished 8th in both.
For the men, it was 17-year old Cooper Scharff of the Flyers Aquatic Swim Team who touched with the top time. Scharff was just off of his lifetime best of 57,36, touching in 57.57 to beat out Kody Hollingsworth (58.23). Scharff, a member of the class of 2022, is the two-time defending Missouri high school state champion in the 100 back.
The final day of racing also featured another competition between Kate McCarville and Aubree Brouwer, but competing for Springfield Aquatics. McCarville was able to get the best of her teammate in the 200 IM, touching in 2:16.84 to Brouwer’s 2:17.50. For McCarville, the event was one of the three she contested at Wave II of the Olympic Trials last month, where she took 39th in 2:17.80. Her best time in the race comes from Wave I of Trials, where she stopped the clock in 2:15.09
A member of the class of 2023, 15-year old Ryan Healy took nearly a second off of his lifetime best in the 200 IM to win. Healy touched in 2:09.14, .99 faster than his previous best of 2:10.13 from May of this year. Just behind Healy was William Bonnett, the 2020 Missouri Class 1 state champion in the short course 200 IM. Bonnett touched in 2:09.26, well under his previous best of 2:10.74.
Closing out the meet, Micah Chambers of the Aquatic Club of Enid and the University of Tennessee won the men’s 50 free. He wasn’t far off of his lifetime best in the race, a 22.79 from May, touching in 23.05. At Wave I of Olympic Trials last month, he qualified for finals in the race, ultimately taking 14th in 22.97.
