Ilya Kharun Puts 100 Fly WJR On Watch with 49.66 Canadian Record in Prelims

2022 FINA SHORT COURSE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

17 year-old Ilya Kharun has been making the most of his first meet representing Canada on the world stage. Heading into today, he already broke the World Junior Record and the Canadian Record in the 50 fly twice, and he looks to be on track to do that again at double the distance.

In today’s prelims of the 100 fly, Kharun broke his own Canadian Record with a 49.66 effort, which qualified him 4th heading into this evening’s semifinal rounds. He had previously set that national record just last month, with a 49.93 at the Indianapolis stop of the 2022 World Cup circuit.

Additionally, Kharun’s time this morning puts him within striking range of the World Junior Record of 49.53, which Li Zhuhao set back in 2017 at a World Cup stop in Singapore. The following year, Zhuhao won bronze medals in both the 100 and 200 butterfly events at the 2018 Short Course World Championships.

Kharun will be aiming to make the semis after just missing out on the finals of the 50 fly earlier this week. He qualified 8th in prelims, breaking the WJR, then broke it again in semis, but tied for 8th. He then tied his own WJR during the swim-off, but lost out to Estonia’s Daniel Zaitsev for the last spot in the championship final.

He’s proving that whatever Coach Ron Aitken is up to in Vegas is not limited to producing endurance athletes.
