Horton Breaks State Record to Highlight Louisiana D2 State Champs

Saint Thomas More senior Grace Horton, an LSU commit, blew away the field at the 2016 Louisiana Division 2 High School State Championships on the way to 2 individual state titles. She was dominant in the girls’ 100 back, winning the raced by 5 seconds. Horton’s 55.84 in that race broke her own former State Record of 57.17, which she set at the 2015 version of this meet. She also won the 100 free earlier in the session, clocking a 51.73 to win by over 2 seconds.

Gabriela O’Neil was also a double event winner, picking up titles in the 200 free and 100 breast for Cabrini High School. She was the only swimmer under 2:00 in the 200 free, cruising to victory with a 1:56.94. O’Neil secured her 2nd gold in the 100 breast, touching in 1:08.71.

On the boys’ side, Ruston’s Jackson Boersma pulled in 2 individual golds to help his team to their overall team title. First, he won the boys’ 50 free, clocking a 21.32 to lead a 1-2 finish with his teammate John Higginbotham (22.53). Boersma then dominated the 100 breast, winning by over 5 seconds with his 58.03 to clock the only sub-1:00 of the field.

Also picking up multiple individual titles were Terrebonne’s Alec Adams and Thomas Jefferson High School’s Owen Martin. Adams was the 200 free champ in 1:46.37 before going on to win the 100 fly in 52.89. Martin, on the other hand, won the 200 IM in 1:56.29 and the 500 free in 4:46.77.
