Horton Breaks 20-Year-Old Record At Louisiana High School D2 State

St. Thomas More’s Grace Horton broke a state 100 back record that had stood for two decades, highlighting the Louisiana Division 2 State Championships.

Horton went 57.17 to win the 100 back, breaking the 1995 mark set by Jenny Rohan. Horton would also win the 100 free in 53.04, blowing out the field by more than two seconds.

Saint Scholastica won the team title while sweeping the relays.

Freshman Gabriella Fouchi was their only individual winner, going 24.86 to roll the 50 free field. Fouchi was also a part of both 200-yard relays. She joined Lindsey Parkins, Anna Rawls and Katherine Stolin to go 1:55.72 in the medley, hitting a 25.13 split. In the 200 free relay, Brittany Pierce, Stolin, Ally Spell and Fouchi went 1:42.84, with a 24.8 anchor leg from Fouchi.

Stolin, Spell, Alyssa Navarro and Pierce reconvened to go 3:49.61 in the meet-ending 400 free relay. Pierce led that crew with a 54.67 anchor split.

Academy of the Sacred Heart senior Laura Bruce won both of her individual events. Bruce was 2:00.08 to win the 200 free and 58.93 to take the 100 fly.

On the boys side, sophomore Jackson Boersma won all four of his races to hlead Ruston to the team title.

Boersma took the 50 free in 21.69 early, beating the next-closest finisher by 1.6 seconds. He was also dominant in the 100 back, going 54.42 to win by a second and a half.

Boersma would lead off the 200 medley relay in 25.05, joining Rob Kyte, Blake Rhymes and John Higginbotham to go 1:41.89. He also anchored the 400 free relay in 48.38, combining with Cameron Roberts, Nathan Hegab and Rhymes to go 3:27.82.

Rhymes and Kyte also won individual events, Rhymes the 200 IM in 2:07.53 and Kyte the 100 free in 48.85.

The other double individual winner on the men’s side was Thomas Jefferson sophomore Owen Martin. He took on the tough 100 fly/500 free combo, winning both in 51.83 and 4:50.70, respectively.

Other event winners:

  • Ruston High won a pair of events on the girls side. Junior Maddie Carson took the 200 IM in 2:14.65.
  • Her teammate Kelsey Davis won the 500 free in 5:29.35.
  • Alexandria High’s Sarah Harrison was 1:12.07 to win the 100 breast.
  • Holy Cross’s Pedro Rivera won the boys 100 breast in 59.17. He also joined Josh Reimonenq, Joaquim Mitchell and Casey Nee to win the 200 free relay in 1:34.32.
  • Terrebonne junior Alec Adams went 1:48.12 to win the 200 free.
