Time Trials were incorporated into the 2021 Turkish Junior Meet which began yesterday in Edirne. Among the races was a men’s 100m fly trial, with athlete Umitan Gures as the sole competitor. The one-man show proved fortuitous, as Gunes managed to lower his own Turkish national record in the event.

Touching in a time of 51.91, Gures shaved .06 off of his previous Turkish standard of 51.97, a time he posted nearly 2 years ago. This time around in Edirne, Gures opened in 24.32 and closed in 27.59 to notch his new record and sit among the top 25 competitors in the world this season.

Another record bit the dust in the regular competition, courtesy of a foursome of women who got it done in the 800m freestyle relay. Gizem Guvenc, Beril Boecekler, Merve Tuncel and Deniz Ertain collectively stopped the clock in a time of 8:02.76 to log a new national standard in the relay tonight.

Guvenc opened in 1:59.35 while Boecekler clocked 2:02.40 on the 2nd leg. 16-year-old Tuncel, the woman who notched a new 800m free record yesterday, produced a 3rd leg split of 2:00.17 before Ertain sealed the deal in 2:00.84

A time of 8:02.76 moves Turkey into wildcard spot #2 of women’s 800m free relay squads that could qualify for Tokyo in addition to the top 12 from the 2019 FINA World Championships.
