Germany’s Heintz Breaks National Record with 1:57 in 200 IM Final

On day 6 of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, Germany’s Philip Heintz set the German National Record in the final of the men’s 200 IM. Heintz swam to 6th place with a 1:57.47, breaking his previous German Record of 1:58.85 he set in the semifinals.

The big difference maker in his swim tonight came on the back half. He dropped over 7 tenths of a second on his breaststroke split, swimming a 33.53 on the breast leg in the final compared to his 34.28 split from the semis.

In setting his new record, Heintz also earned himself a 6th place finish in his first Olympic finals. Down the finals stretch, he ran down Team USA’s Ryan Lochte, but came up short by just a hundredth, as Lochte touched 5th in 1:57.47.
