GCU Women, Hawaii Men Victorious In Split

HONOLULU — Grand Canyon delivered a solid weekend at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex, posting multiple conference-leading times and setting two pool records during a double-dual meet weekend against Hawaii.

GCU’s women edged the host on Day 2 by a score of 134–127, capping a successful two-day competition.

The Lopes made an early statement in Friday’s session behind record-worthy sprints and relays. GCU freshman Sara Mose won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.78 seconds, the Mountain West’s No. 1 time this season.

Lopes teammate Taylor Stasny added a 55.64 in the 100 individual medley for another top Mountain West time.

On the men’s side, Jasu Ovaskainen clocked 50.00 in the 100 IM for Big West No. 1 time.

In relays, the men’s 400 freestyle team of Mario PerezEli CohenGrzegorz Wanat and Guillermo Carrey finished in 2:57.06 (Big West No. 1).

Additional highlights included Paula Martinez Moreno winning the 100 butterfly (54.10), Alex Volkov topping the men’s 100 backstroke (49.08) and Carter Dooling winning the 100 breaststroke (56.20).

In addition to Volkov’s win, Asher Havenhill placed second (49.14 ) and Mohamed Mohamady took third (50.23) in the 100 backstroke.

Day 2 recap

GCU continued its surge on Saturday. The men’s 400 medley relay of Volkov, Dooling, Ovaskainen and Guillermo Carrey broke the pool record that GCU had previously set in 2024 with a time of  3:14.34 on Saturday.

Stasny set another facility mark in the 200 breaststroke, clocking 2:12.10 to break the mark of 2:12.47 by Minnesota’s Kierra Smith in 2015.

Mose followed with a 49.72 in the 100 freestyle.

Other winners included Martinez in the 200 butterfly (2:01.59), Mohamed Mohamady in the 200 backstroke (1:47.63), Dooling in the 200 breaststroke (2:01.39) and Ovaskainen in the 200 individual medley (1:49.61).

On Day 2, the Lopes added several key victories to an already impressive weekend. Mario Perez won the men’s 50 freestyle in 19.92 seconds while fellow Spaniard Marta Guasp claimed the women’s 200 backstroke title with a 2:01.21.

Sophomore Beth Young took the 50 breaststroke (28.37), and Dooling swept the men’s breaststroke sprints with a 25.42 in the 50 and a 2:01.39 in the 200.

Ovaskainen secured a 1:49.61 victory in the men’s 200 IM, and Martinez captured the women’s 200 butterfly (2:01.59)

The women’s 400 medley relay of Guasp, Young, Martinez and Mose finished first in 3:41.80.

Sophomore Omar Elsayd headlined the men’s diving events by winning the 1-meter springboard with 335.48 points, outscoring Hawaii’s Tristan Rodriguez by more than 35 points.

On Day 2, Elsayd continued his dominance, capturing the 3-meter title with 338.78 points.

GCU’s women secured a narrow team win, defeating Hawaii 134–127, while the men added multiple top-three finishes to cap off a strong team showing in a 134-128 loss.

The Lopes’ performances positioned the program atop several conference leaderboards and etched two new marks into the pool record books, underscoring their growth.

The weekend marked the first true dual meets of the season. The Lopes will head to Air Force for a two-day meeting starting Friday.

HONOLULU–The University of Hawai’i swimming and diving teams squared off against Grand Canyon for the second straight day. The Rainbow Warriors once again edged out the ‘Lopes, 134-128, while the Rainbow Wahine fell just short against GCU, 134-127 on Saturday morning at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex. It was another record-setting day as four DKAC records fell and and three UH divers recorded NCAA Zone qualifying marks.

“The Rainbow Wahine & Rainbow Warriors had fantastic performances in our first home intercollegiate competition of the year. GCU provided very strong competition that required us to bring our best selves.” says head coach Steve Allnutt. “The Wahine divers lead the way sweeping places 1-5 on both boards and the platform over the two days. Many swimmers stepped up in off events or new relay spots and shined brightly with lifetime best times in their events. Our Wahine freshmen swept three different events, the 1000 yard freestyle, 400 yard individual medley, and 500 yard freestyle. Not to be outdone, the Warriors won both meets and swept the podium in multiple events as well. In four weeks we’ll be competing at the SMU Invitational against more top level competition, so we’ll get back to work until then. Go ‘Bows!”

The morning started off with diving. For the second-straight day, the women swept the top five places in the 1-meter springboard competition. After winning last night’s 3-meter springboard, Macie Wheeler won her second event of the weekend with a score of 318.25 which enters her at No. 6 in the UH record books for the 1M dive. Lovissa Gustavsson finished second tallying a 286.13 final score, while Avery Coates posted a 283.50. With the top three all scoring over 265, Wheeler, Gustavsson and Coates all recorded NCAA Zone qualifying scores. UH’s Ruby Pickron finished just under the qualifying score with a 264.53 for fourth and Keira Chandler finished in fifth with a 262.28 total score.

On the men’s side, freshman Tristan Rodriguez led Hawai’i coming in second with a score of 299.10. 

Later, the two squads competed in a team competition. The UH women’s team of Pickron, Wheeler, and Gustavsson defeated GCU, 327.53-to-260.85. The Hawai’i men’s team of Juan Estaban Ramirez Tamayo, Oliver Wignall and Rodriguez fell to GCU, 337-to-314.55.

Hawai’i senior Karol Ostrowski won three individual events and was part of the winning relay team that sealed the win for the ‘Bows on Saturday. In the 50 backstroke, Ostrowski finished first, clocking in at 21.32 with Tim Brown claiming third at 22.71. Ostrowski struck again, claiming the 100 freestyle title with a 43.04 time to set a new DKAC record, improving the record he owned from last year with the previous pool-best time of 43.09. He also won the 50 butterfly crown (21.18). Ostrowski finished the meet anchoring the 200 free relay, with a team-best split of 19.55.

UH senior Holly Nelson led the ‘Bows with a score of 22, winning three golds and a silver for the Rainbow Wahine. She won the 50 free (22.62), the 50 butterfly (24.27) and she swam the anchor leg of the 200 free relay to finish the dual meet. Nelson came in second in the 100 freestyle. Nelson’s winning time in the 50 free set a new DKAC record, bettering Sara Mose’s (GCU) time of 22.78 set last night. 

In the 500 free, freshman Brooke Bennett captured UH’s first win of the day, leading a freshman sweep of the top three  places in the 500 free with a time of 4:55.43. Gaby Kelly and Ester Le Maigat-Lecou finished second and third respectively with times of 5:01.42 and 4:02.27. For Bennett, it was the first of two golds for the freshman as she also won the 200 free with a time of 1:50.42 and was a member of the third place 200 free relay team.

Hawai’i Tom Thalau won the men’s 500 free, as UH took four of the top five spots. Thalau led the ‘Bows recording a 4:29.78. Eric Kupsky continued his stellar weekend, finishing second with a time of 4:30.69. UH’s Riley Clinton came in fourth (4:31.96) and Zach Kohm finished fifth (4:39.54). Thalau finished the day tallying the second-most points for UH with 17.

Alexa Ozment hit the wall first to claim the 50 backstroke coming in at 25.52, while Eva Kovaluk finished third with a time of 26.23. 

Hawai’i’s Zane JohnsonAleks Tomaszewski and Victor Daenais swept the podium of the 200 butterfly with Johnson seizing first place with a time of 1:48.77. Tomaszewski touched the wall at 1:48.82 for second and Dagenais finished with a time of 1:49.12 for third.

Dagenais won his first event of the meet coming in with a time of 1:37.54 in the 200 freestyle. Dagenais has a strong showing on Saturday, finishing in third in three events – the 200 free, the 400 medley relay and the 200 free relay. He came in third for UH into points with 12.

Zane Johnson led a 1,2,3 finish for the ‘Bows in the 200 butterfly. Johnson finished in first with a time of 1:48.77, while Tomazewski was second (1:48.82) and Dagenais finished third (1:49.12).

The women’s “A” team of Alexa OzmentAziza MeyerQuincy Key and Holly Nelson captured the 200 free relay with a time of 1:30.92 which set a new DKAC record. The previous record was set in 2000 by the UH team of L. Thomas, S. Watchorn, E. Parkinson, and R. DuPlessis with a time of 1:31.74.

The meet title hinged on the final race of the day for the Rainbow Warriors. In the 200 free relay, the UH team “A” of Tim Brown, Tomaszewski, Finn Brophy and Ostrowski won with a time of 1:19.68.

The men’s and women’s diving teams will next head to Riverside, Calif. to compete in the CBU Diving Invite from Oct. 31-Nov. 1 at the Lancer Aquatic Center. The swim teams’ next event is the SMU Invitational in Dallas, Texas from Nov. 19-22.
