Futures Qualifier Alexis Wendel To Stay In-State With Commitment to Illinois

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Alexis Wendel of Winnetka, Illinois has verbally committed to swim at the University of Illinois for the 2022-2023 school year and beyond. Wendel is an extremely versatile athlete, as she’s a Futures qualifier in fly and back events, but also has competitive free and IM times.

Wendel swims year-round with New Trier Aquatics and recently competed at the 2021 ISCA Summer Senior Blast. While in Florida, Wendel qualified for 4 finals and notched new personal best times in the 50/100 fly and the 100 free.

Wendel’s Best Times (SCY):

  • 200 free – 1:52.66
  • 500 free – 5:04.49
  • 1000 free – 10:28.74
  • 100 back – 56.88
  • 200 back – 2:04.37
  • 100 fly – 56.85
  • 200 fly – 2:05.72

Wendel is a rising senior at New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois. She is a two-time IHSA state qualifier in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle events. New Trier High School placed 3rd overall in 2018 and 2nd overall in 2019. The IHSA State Finals were not held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Wendel will make an immediate impact to the Illini’s current roster upon her arrival to Champaign. Wendel’s versatility will allow her to be placed in freestyle, butterfly, backstroke, and IM events. Based on the 2020-2021 team results, her best times would’ve ranked her #2 in the 100/200 back and 100 fly, #3 in the 200/1000 free, 200 fly and 400 IM, and #4 in the 500 free.

The University of Illinois is a Division I school that competes in the B1G Conference. At the 2021 B1G Championships, the Illini women finished 12th out of 13 teams with 177 points.

Wendel’s mother, Jill Doll-Wendel, swam for Illini and was part of the class of 1992. Wendel’s twin, Leslie, has committed to swim at the University of Iowa as part of the class of 2026.

Wendel will join Liv Dorshorst, Sara Jess, Brigitta Neverman, and Jilly Wilson as members of the incoming class of 2026.
